2025 saw the release of Weapons, one of the best horror movies of the year, which keeps getting better and better. 2025 was a great year for horror, with big hits like Sinners, The Long Walk, and 28 Years Later, as well as lesser-known movies like The Ugly Stepsister, which are now getting the recognition they deserve.
Topping the lists of the best horror movies of 2025 (and best movies of 2025, in general) is Weapons. Written and directed by Zach Cregger, Weapons was released in August 2025, thus being one of the movies that started spooky season last year. Weapons was a critical and commercial success, and its continued success on streaming proves it just keeps getting better.
What Is Weapons About?
The events of Weapons begin when, on a Wednesday night, two years earlier, in Maybrook, Pennsylvania, the children from a third-grade classroom ran out of their homes at 2:17 a.m. The kids disappeared, and only one student from their class, Alex Lilly, didn’t run away. Given the mysterious circumstances around their disappearances, their teacher, Justine (Julia Garner), becomes the main suspect.
Weapons is divided into six chapters, each one told from the perspective of a different character involved in the story.
Justine decides to investigate on her own, as does Archer (Josh Brolin), the father of one of the kids. Weapons has a wild twist that explains what happened to the kids in Justine’s class, and introduces an unforgettable and unexpected villain. Weapons leans more towards psychological horror with occasional jumpscares that are more than justified and work perfectly within the story.
Weapons Will Age Well
While it hasn’t even been a year since the release of Weapons, it can already be said that it’s a horror movie that will age well. Weapons’ story is quite unique among horror movies, with truly unexpected twists, and it perfectly builds tension and mystery by exploring the story through different perspectives.
The themes in Weapons are also relevant and addressed in clever ways, such as generational trauma, substance-use disorder, and manipulation, with which many viewers can relate. The unpredictability, high production value, strong performances, and core themes and meaning make Weapons a future cult classic that will age well.
Weapons Deserved A Best Picture Nom
Weapons is well-deserving of critical acclaim and its $269.1 million at the box office (against a budget of $38 million), and it has received nominations for various awards. Most recently, Weapons was nominated in two categories at the Golden Globes (Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement), but the Oscars didn’t give it the recognition it deserved.
Weapons only got one nomination at the 2026 Academy Awards, in the category of Best Supporting Actress, which is very well-deserved, as Amy Madigan steals the show with her performance. However, Weapons definitely deserved to be recognized in the Best Picture category, as well.
Weapons is not only perfectly written and with excellent performances, but its cinematography is also outstanding, as is Cregger’s direction. It’s interesting and intriguing, as this year the Oscars recognized other horror movies like Sinners (which got 16 nominations), The Ugly Stepsister, and Frankenstein, but then again, Weapons’ success with the audience and its longevity will speak more than how many Oscar nominations it got.
