Shows like Andor and The Mandalorian have been rightly praised, but Star Wars: Skeleton Crew still hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves. Star Wars has been very hit-and-miss since Disney acquired Lucasfilm a little over a decade ago. We’ve gotten some of the best Star Wars, but we’ve also gotten some of the worst Star Wars.
Skeleton Crew should’ve been one of Disney’s biggest Star Wars hits. It should’ve galvanized the fan base to declare the franchise “saved” like the first season of The Mandalorian or both seasons of Andor. But it came and went without making much noise.
Skeleton Crew Is The Most Underrated Star Wars TV Show
Skeleton Crew is easily the most underrated Star Wars TV show; it’s the perfect antidote to all the problems with modern-era Star Wars. When people complain about The Rise of Skywalker pandering to the old-guard fandom, or Ahsoka focusing more on building an extended cinematic universe than telling a story worth investing in, Skeleton Crew is the show they wish it was.
It’s not about expanding the universe and crossing over with other shows, like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett; it’s a refreshingly self-contained coming-of-age story. It doesn’t have any big legacy character cameos or cliffhangers that’ll be paid off in another series. It tells its own separate Star Wars adventure, and it’s delightful.
Skeleton Crew Is A Reminder Of What Star Wars Should Be
Skeleton Crew is basically The Goonies in space. It starts off in the literal suburbs of a galaxy far, far away, where a ragtag group of kids unwittingly embark on an intergalactic adventure that brings them face-to-face with nefarious Force users and diabolical pirate crews. It’s a reminder of what Star Wars should be: family-friendly escapism.
Will Skeleton Crew Ever Get A Season 2?
Disney still hasn’t officially greenlit a second season of Skeleton Crew, but showrunner Jon Watts teased more Skeleton Crew in an interview last summer. In order to avoid getting into trouble with the Mouse House’s goon squad, Watts diplomatically said, “I love Star Wars, and I would love to make more Star Wars.”
But he also added that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni — Watts’ main producers on Skeleton Crew, and the creative architects behind the Mandalorian-verse — focus more on what they’re passionate about as storytellers than what the streaming numbers are telling them. Watts summed up Favreau and Filoni’s policy: “If we have something we want to make, we’re gonna make it.”
So, even though Star Wars: Skeleton Crew underperformed in its first season, it doesn’t mean we won’t eventually see a second season. But Disney can’t dilly-dally with this one; it’s a coming-of-age story, and its child stars are coming of age in real time. Did we learn nothing from Stranger Things?
