Peacock’s Ponies season 1 sets up just as many questions as it answers, leading to many mysteries that season 2 needs to answer. Emilia Clarke’s new spy thriller starts with one of the best opening sequences, and it only continues to get better with every episode.
Rather than sticking to the genre's hypermasculine roots, Ponies brings women and femininity into the spy world. Similarly, it defies conventions by blending together comedy, thriller, mystery, and romance. This ebb and flow feels very natural and realistic.
The show is packed with twists and turns, offering some smaller answers while keeping many mysteries alive. Ultimately, Ponies season 1 ended with a bang – pun intended – and it will need to give us answers to these eight big questions.
8 How Did Cheryl Become Involved With The Soviets?
The end of Ponies season 1 reveals that at least two moles have existed within the CIA's Soviet Embassy branch. The less shocking of the two revelations is that Cheryl Szymanski, the wife of Ray, is actively working with the KGB against the US. She was acting suspiciously throughout the entire season, so I predicted that she was working against the CIA.
However, the mystery that season 2 will need to solve is when she started working with the KGB and how she became involved in the first place. She is never shown interacting with them prior to the flashback to one week earlier. She never mentions having friends or family in the Soviet Union. There isn’t a clear connection or explanation for her involvement.
Considering she speaks Russian, I suspect that she may have spent some time there before marrying Ray. They could have even sent her to the US with the explicit purpose of marrying a CIA agent to get someone on the inside. That’s pure speculation, though.
7 What Really Happened To Chris & Tom?
Halfway through Ponies season 1, Vera reveals to Twila that she was present on the plane with Tom and Chris. According to her, the plane landed safely outside the Soviet Kompromat facility. She states that Tom revealed to the KGB that they would be coming, so soldiers greeted them with guns. She said they shot the two CIA agents.
However, the entire story is in question due to two flaws. Firstly, she said that Twila’s husband, Tom, was the mole, but Bea’s husband, Chris, was the actual mole. Secondly, she said that the KGB soldiers killed Chris and Tom, but Chris is still alive at the end of Ponies season 1.
It’s possible that part of her story is true; it’s possible that none of her story is true. At this point, there’s really no way to know. The only part of the story that seems completely factual is that there was a plane and that Tom and Chris were on it.
6 How Did Chris Become A Mole In Ponies?
The second mole in Ponies is Chris, Bea’s husband, who supposedly died at the start of the show but has secretly been living in hiding. There is a hint as to how Chris became involved with the KGB. When Bea finds the sex tape between Chris and a Soviet woman, Dane tells her that Chris was doing undercover work with the KGB.
Supposedly, Chris only made the sex tape in order to prove his loyalty to the KGB. He then obtained information from the Soviets and took it back to the CIA. That gives him a connection to the Soviets, but the question is how they flipped him.
If he’s actually a decent man, he might have become a mole to try to prevent the Soviets from blowing up his marriage. Alternatively, maybe he was actually having an affair with the woman but wanted to keep it secret. Either way, it tracks with how Andrei Vasiliev blackmails the other Ponies characters. Or, he might actually believe in the Soviets.
5 Did Sasha Survive His Stab Wound?
Besides Bea and Twila, Sasha is pretty much the only other character I fully trust in Ponies. He’s had multiple opportunities to betray the CIA. He’s had opportunities to harm Bea. He has a strong motive to continue working with the Americans, at least until he learns that the CIA might have killed his sister, Galyna.
This makes it all the more painful to know that he was stabbed at Andrei Vasiliev’s cabin because he killed Aksana’s boyfriend. He’s in pretty bad shape when Bea and Twila take him out to the car. Luckily, the retrieval call the two spies sent out earlier did actually go through.
The Marines arrive at the cabin to pick up Sasha and take him to the hospital. Unfortunately, there is no clear answer about whether he lived or died because we follow Bea and Twila from that point forward, and they don’t go to see him. Hopefully, Ponies season 2 will confirm that they managed to save Sasha.
4 What Is The Significance Of The Pegasus Over The World Symbol?
Early in the show, they learn that Tom used a code to send out a message about a winged horse over the world. They eventually figure out that he’s referencing a symbol.
Bea and Twila find a picture of a pegasus over a globe on the bar that Twila burns down, which is also where Tom and Chris were before they left for the plane trip. Later, it’s present at the Soviet Kompromat facility. Then, when they mention the symbol to Sasha, he mentions that he works for a KGB company called Pegasus.
Given the number of times that it pops up in Ponies season 1, it’s a bit surprising that there isn’t more clarity about what it could possibly mean. My best guess is that it’s a symbol used for a secret Soviet project, but that’s conjecture based on past spy shows I’ve seen. Ponies season 2 should provide some clarity on the matter.
3 Did The CIA Really Kill Galyna?
Every spy, agent, and asset has a “why” as to why they’re working in espionage. For Bea, it’s wanting clarity about her husband’s death. For Twila, it’s wanting to avoid her home. For Sasha, it’s getting back at the Soviets for killing his sister, Galyna. However, the show hints early on that she isn’t just another one of the KGB murders.
When Twila shows the photos of the murdered women to a sex worker, she says that she knows all except Galyna. The crime scene looks a little bit different than others, even though the method is similar, which also sets her apart. In the finale, Andrei tells Twila and Bea that the CIA is actually the one who killed Galyna.
According to him, they knew that Sasha would flip sides if he thought the KGB killed them. I wouldn’t put it past the CIA to do this. At the same time, Andrei isn’t exactly a reliable source. As such, we need actual confirmation about what happened to Galyna in Ponies season 2.
2 Will Ivanna & Twila Ever See Each Other Again?
Ponies season 1 featured two romance subplots. From their first interaction, Bea and Sasha have an awkward but cute chemistry that feels very earnest. It seems pretty likely that these two will see each other, considering they are both main characters and central to the plot.
Meanwhile, Twila immediately has chemistry with Ivanna, the Russian woman from the market who provides information to Twila in exchange for money or goods. While Bea and Sasha have a very wholesome dynamic, Twila and Ivanna have heat and tension between them. This builds and builds until they have sex.
Twila says that she will see Ivanna again if she survives the situation with Andrei. Unlike Bea and Sasha, their reunion isn’t guaranteed. Ivanna is just a supporting character, and she’s not central to the storyline. As such, Ponies season 2 will need to show whether Ivanna and Twila reunite.
1 How Will Bea & Twila Survive The KGB Agents?
At the end of Ponies season 1, an explosive goes off in the vault, setting everything on fire. In the chaos, Andrei gets loose. The firefighters who come in to help aren’t actually firefighters. Instead, they’re KGB agents there to collect all the information they can get. Two of the agents put guns to Bea and Twila’s heads.
Considering that Bea and Twila are the main characters of Ponies, it’s almost guaranteed that they will survive the situation. The question is how. Throughout the first season, the writers make sure not to give the two women abilities they wouldn’t otherwise have. They don’t get martial arts abilities or Reacher-style combat abilities.
As such, it seems unlikely that Bea and Twila will fight their way out. Instead, Andrei might take them captive, with the CIA later saving them. They might be able to create a commotion to get out of there. Ultimately, Ponies season 2 certainly has some interesting directions they could go with the story.
