UK Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has released a statement calling on Elon Musk to stop Grok, the built-in artificial intelligence tool on X, from being used to create fake and non-consensual sexualised images of women.
In recent weeks, multiple media outlets have uncovered complaints from X users who have been victims of Grok deepfakes. Many of the cases include instances where Grok has created sexualised images of children and women.
A picture of 14-year-old Stranger Things actor Nell Fisher was manipulated by Grok to put her in a banana print bikini, according to The Guardian. The issues around Grok began in late December after the AI tool was given an update that allowed users to post photographs and ask for AI-generated edits.
On Monday, UK regulator Ofcom said it had made “urgent contact” with Musk’s X and was investigating concerns Grok has been producing “undressed images” of people. Last week, the platform issued a warning to users, telling them not to use Grok to generate illegal content, including child sexual abuse material.
Kendall said the images being made with Grok on X were “absolutely appalling” and urged the social media platform to move fast.
“No one should have to go through the ordeal of seeing intimate deepfakes of themselves online,” Kendall said. “We cannot and will not allow the proliferation of these demeaning and degrading images, which are disproportionately aimed at women and girls.”
She added: “X needs to deal with this urgently.”
