Ten years after The Force Awakens introduced Kylo Ren and his obsession with Darth Vader, Star Wars is finally delivering a highly anticipated confrontation between the Supreme Leader and his powerful grandfather.
Marvel Comics' new and canonical Legacy of Vader series by Charles Soule and Luke Ross has been following Kylo Ren's dark adventures between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Now, the upcoming final issue promises a defining Force encounter between Darth Vader and his grandson.
Star Wars' Legacy of Vader Series Is Coming To An End This Week
Star Wars’ Legacy of Vader series concludes this week with its 12th issue, closing a dark new chapter that has focused on Kylo Ren uncovering the secrets of his grandfather's history as a Sith lord, seeking to unlock a similar power during the sequel era as the First Order's new Supreme Leader.
Featuring brutal trials and Force visions, Ben Solo has been retracing Vader’s path, all while grappling with the desire to kill his own past and become feared across the galaxy. Now, preview pages for the upcoming Legacy of Vader #12 have teased a final Force encounter with Darth Vader himself via the Dark Lord's secret vault within his fortress on Mustafar.
Triggering a powerful vision upon entering, it looks as though Kylo Ren will soon be able to directly speak with his grandfather for the first time, going far beyond communing with the charred remains of Vader's mask recovered from Endor.
Is Kylo Ren Facing The Real Darth Vader (Or Palpatine)?
While it's exciting to see a canonical Kylo Ren/Darth Vader encounter, it should be questioned if Ben Solo will be speaking with the actual Darth Vader. After all, Anakin Skywalker was redeemed and became a Force ghost at the end of Return of the Jedi, over 30 years before this series.
While the preview pages have Vader confirming that this place is true and free of outside interference, he also says that the only voices within are those Ben's brought with him. That wording does evoke Ben Solo's future encounter with the resurrected Palpatine in Rise of Skywalker, who tells Kylo Ren that Palpatine himself was "every voice you've ever heard inside your head" (including Vader's).
This raises some doubts that Ben will be interacting with a legitimate Vader, but instead Palpatine as a preceding manipulation to help draw Kylo Ren to Exegol. Either way, it's going to be fascinating to see how this new Darth Vader encounter unfolds and how it informs Kylo Ren's future decisions in Rise of Skywalker.
