The Pitt season 2's missing character will eventually return. The five-time Emmy-winning medical drama returned to HBO Max mere months after the conclusion of its first season, as Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch (Noah Wyle) and the staff at the emergency room of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center deal with a hectic July 4th weekend shift.

Along with Wyle, who also serves as executive producer, most of The Pitt cast is back for season 2. The notable exception is Tracy Ifeachor, who exited the role of Dr. Heather Collins near the end of the show's first installment. Collins' absence will be explained on-screen. But viewers will have to wait a little longer to see Mateo Diaz (Jalen Thomas Brooks), a major recurring player in season 1.

As part of the Matt's Inside Line newsletter, reporter Matt Webb Mitovich shared an update on the status of Mateo. The emergency room nurse and a potential love interest for Dr. Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez) does not appear in The Pitt season 2 premiere episode. But according to series creator and showrunner R. Scott Gemmill, Mateo will return eventually. He's just “working the night shift,” according to Gemmill.

Despite its large group of characters, including hospital staff, patients, and relatives, Mateo receives a bit of a spotlight throughout the show's first 15 episodes. He's well remembered for Javadi's crush on him, which resurfaces in The Pitt season 1 finale, but he also has a few tense interactions with the disgruntled Drug Driscoll (Drew Powell), who eventually turns violent.

It seems like the breakout HBO Max hit could be setting up for Javadi and Diaz to reunite closer to the end of season 2, with Diaz coming in for his night shift and Javadi getting ready to head home. There's the added detail, established in the premiere, of Javadi having a birthday that she's not exactly excited to celebrate. That could change, particularly if Diaz gets involved.

This news is likely to renew calls for a spinoff of the Emmy-winning drama, focusing on what happens during the night shift. It's a possibility that has sprung up as soon as the premise proved to be successful. The cast and crew and even executives downplayed spinoff talks in interviews, explaining that the focus remains on the main series.

The Pitt season 2 releases episodes on a weekly schedule, with one episode a week until the finale in April. Viewers will have to wait a bit longer, then, to see Mateo and whether there will be any spark with Javadi.

The Pitt season 2 streams new episodes Thursdays at 9 PM on HBO Max
