EXCLUSIVE: Netflix is not proceeding with additional seasons of freshman drama The Abandons and sophomore comedy The Vince Staples Show.

The streamer’s What We Watched semi-annual report on July – December 2025 viewership released yesterday provides some context for the cancellation decisions.

According to the report, The Abandons logged 19.8M views in its first 28 days on the service after the Western premiered Dec. 4.

The series, starring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, spent 2 weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for English series, ranking as No.4 in its first two weeks of release with 7.4M and 7.6M views, respectively. It quickly faded after that, dropping off the Top 10 and mustering 4.8M more views in the following 17 days.

The big-budget series, which launched to mixed reviews, also underwent a behind the scenes shake-up, with creator Kurt Sutter leaving before end of production. Some cast members already have been booking new jobs. Headey is staying in the Netflix fold as a lead on Charlie Brooker’s four-part detective series for the streamer.

Set in Washington Territory, circa 1854, The Abandons revolves around the matriarchs of two very different families, payed by Headey and Anderson. Executive producers included Chris Keyser, Robert Askins, Stephen Surjik, Otto Bathurst, Emmy Grinwis, and Jon Paré.

Season 2 of The Vince Staples Show was No. 1,446 on Netflix’s Second Half of 2025 viewership report with 1.7M views following its Nov. 6 release. The comedy, co-created by and starring rapper Vince Staples, drew 4.6M views for its first season over a period that was twice as long, from Feb. 15, 2024 through June 30, 2024. (All streaming releases are front-loaded, with the bulk of viewing done in the first 90 days, so doubling the measuring period does not result in twice the viewership.)

While The Vince Staples Show never found a wide audience — it never charted on Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 — it was well received, scoring 94% with critics and 88% with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

Created by Staples, Ian Edelman and Maurice Williams, the satirical comedy loosely inspired by Staples life was executive produced by Kenya Barris, Staples, Corey Smyth, William Stefan Smith, Andrea Sperling and Leonard Chang.
