Sophie Turner's New Prime Video Heist Series "Turn[s] The Formula Upside Down"

Sophie Turner's new Prime Video heist series, Steal, "turn[s] the formula upside down" according to the thriller's stars. Turner's latest TV show is the upcoming Steal, a heist thriller where Zara (Turner), an unassuming office worker, becomes involved in a major heist at her investment company, Lochmill Capital. The series has a major focus on what happens after the heist.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for Steal, Turner and co-star Archie Madekwe explained how the Prime Video heist series offers a unique formula in contrast to other shows in the genre. They spoke about how the larger focus on what happens after the heist defines the series, reshaping the lives of perpetrators and victims in the process:

Liam Crowley: I feel like it explores a new corner of the heist genre, if you will, where in most heist shows or movies, the heist is the whole runtime, but this time we get to have a very extended epilogue going in the direction of what happens after. Can you both speak to the value of venturing into that epilogue and what you think it does in terms of breaking new ground in this genre?

Sophie Turner: What a great point. No one else has actually brought that up.

Archie Madekwe: It does turn the formula upside down, and the first episode ends with this huge twist where you think the goodies and the baddies are set out, but all of a sudden you realize, you don't know who to trust. You don't know whose side you're on. You don't know where the story and where your alliances are going to go because no one is who they say they are. And the show continues like that. I think that usually, that same formula is you know who the thieves are. You know who the victims are. All of a sudden it's all to play for.

Sophie Turner: And it's so refreshing to see the aftermath. I think, as you say, I think so much of heist movies or shows is figuring out how they're going to do it and then the finale is the actual heist. And it's nice to see the fallout from it and the real effects it has on real lives, and not just the people whose pensions were stolen, but also the people involved in the heist and the people adjacent to the people involved in the heist and what that does to families, friends, everyone. I think it's a really wonderful study of that kind of butterfly effect.

According to the official synopsis of the Prime Video original series, Steal sees a DCI investigator named Rhys (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd) leading the charge in finding out how the heist played out and the events that unfold after the fact. This includes investigating Turner and Madekwe's characters due to their seemingly unwilling roles in the robbery.

Based on the actors' statements, this focus on what happens after the heist will have significant repercussions for every character involved. This includes both the main characters, who may have a larger role to play than anticipated, alongside others who will have suffered from Lochmill having billions of pounds meant for everyday people stolen from it.

The thriller TV series was created by S.A. Nikias, with all six episodes directed by Sam Miller (A Gentleman in Moscow) and Hettie Macdonald (Doctor Who). The talent behind-the-scenes points to a riveting series of events that will see motivations unfurl, just as the show deals with the "butterfly effect" as mentioned by Turner.

Steal isn't the only upcoming TV show Turner will be starring in for Prime Video. She'll be playing Lara Croft in a live-action Tomb Raider TV series, which will begin filming in early 2026. Beyond Amazon, she'll also be starring opposite her Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington in the Gothic horror movie The Dreadful, set for theatrical release.

As for the plot of Steal, it seems the show's focus on the aftermath of the heist will cause more tension than the events of the heist itself. The characters will all have to deal with what transpired in various ways, no doubt leading to some shocking revelations and conclusions. How events unfold remains to be seen right now, though.
