Shirtless Sam Smith shows off their tattooed torso as friend rubs sunscreen into their back for day by the sea following concert in Mexico

Shirtless Sam Smith showed off their tattooed chest while walking along the beach in Tulum, Mexico on Monday. 

The singer, 33, who is non-binary and goes by they/them pronouns, was accompanied by a friend who was seen rubbing sunscreen into their back. 

Sam was sporting navy Kappa swimming shorts, showing off an ice cream tattoo on their left leg before going for a dip in the ocean.

They later slipped on a khaki T-shirt and sunglasses to continue their stroll. 

Sam has been in Mexico to perform alongside Brandi Carlile, CMAT and The Chicks at the Girls Just Wanna Weekend 7 at the Barcelo Maya Resort.

The event took place from January 15-19.

Before that, Sam spent November and December performing their To Be Free tour in New York. 

They wrote on Instagram: 'New York has become a second home to me in the last few years, so playing intimate shows at a venue as beautiful as The Warsaw will be a really special experience. I hope you’ll be there to share it with us xx.' 

Sam had some Oscar-winning support as he took to the stage during their hugely successful New York residency. 

Anne Hathaway was in the audience as Sam took to the stage with Ed Sheeran and country star Brandi Carlile for their 22nd show at the 1,000 capacity venue on December 10. 

The actress, an Academy Award winner for her starring role in Les Misérables, later joined Smith and Sheeran for a backstage photo. 

Smith's To Be Free: New York City residency also welcomed appearances from fashion icon Anna Wintour and American musician J.D Sansom.

Addressing a full house between songs, Smith said of their decision to perform a scaled down series of shows: 'I wanted to get back into rooms where I can see your faces.

'It’s been such a beautiful experience, so thank you to the Warsaw.' 

In 2023, Sam, who once described their issues with body image as ‘the basis of all my sadness’, and opened up about learning to love their body, revealing that they now have ‘the opposite of body dysmorphia’. 

They told The Sunday Times that they are now ‘happier than ever’ in their own skin.

Sam said: ‘When I was 25, I came off tour exhausted. I looked to role models in the body world. Every time I went to the pool I felt self-conscious, but I forced myself to take my top off.

‘It paid off because I now have the opposite of body dysmorphia. I look fabulous. I’m finally getting a tan. I’m burnt in places I’ve never been burnt.’ 

In a 2019 Instagram post, Sam wrote about 'fighting the f*** back when it came to looking in the mirror. 

Adding: '[I'll] my body and stop trying to change this chest and these hips and these curves that my mum and dad made and love so unconditionally’. 

Sam is still thought to be in a relationship with long-term love, designer Christian Cowan, who worked with Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Cardi B and Paris Hilton.

The couple first started dating in late 2022 and became public with their iconic Met Gala debut in May 2024. 

Sam is expected to continue their run of live performances in San Francisco this year.
