EXCLUSIVE: Sherlock & Daughter creator Brendan Foley has landed his next project.
Foley is returning to the Nordic region to pen a version of Finnish geopolitical thriller Operation: Arctic Fox, a book by journalist and former army officer Helena Immonen.
Set against escalating Arctic ambitions by Russia and China, the story follows a Finnish family of operatives navigating military conflict, biological warfare, and global espionage as geopolitical tensions reach breaking point. Given Donald Trump’s ambitions in Greenland, the project feels incredibly timely.
Operation: Arctic Fox, which isn’t yet attached to a buyer, is being produced by Ilkka Hynninen and Ilkka Rahkonen’s ICS Nordic. The indie first optioned the novel as part of its development pact with Finnish publishing group WSOY, an alliance created to rethink how Finnish scripted IP is developed for international audiences. The initiative invites authors to take an active stake in the screen adaptation of their work. Immonen will therefore executive produce the series alongside Foley, Hynninen and Rahkonen.
Foley is the creator of hit The CW series Sherlock & Daughter starring David Thewlis and Blu Hunt, which launched last year to positive reviews and stellar ratings while airing across the Nordic public broadcasters. A second season is in the works. Foley’s past projects have had a Nordic slant, including Nordic noir Cold Courage for Lionsgate and Viaplay, and Elisa Viihde’s The Man Who Died.
Foley said: “I’m delighted to be working on the TV adaptation of Helena’s great novel just as the world’s attention is glued to the crucial region at the roof of the world. Audiences come for the Big Idea, but they stay for the characters – people they want to get to know over episodes and seasons. And I’m delighted to be working with ’the two Ilkkas’ of ICS, who both know their stuff and who appreciate what it takes to make a story work internationally.”
