EXCLUSIVE: There will be a comic book to accompany the upcoming indie feature …And Out Comes the Wolf.
Danny Peykoff’s Big Newport Studios and Josh Bernstein’s comics publisher Z2 are unveiling the book series following completion of production of the film, which is inspired by punk band Rancid and its 1995 album ‘And Out Come the Wolves’, the film’s original title. The story follows two best friends fighting for survival in the 1990s East Bay punk scene, surrounded by poverty, drugs and danger.
Artist and writer Kevin Mellon is adapting the graphic novel from the feature script written by Peykoff and the Neese Brothers, who are known as co-executive producers of The Umbrella Academy. There will be several cover variants from underground artist Travis Knight.
The film stars Orlando Norman, Spence Moore II, Heidi Grace Engerman, Cassady McClincy Zhang, Giancarlo Esposito, Harold Perrineau, Taryn Manning and Ryan Hurst.
Peykoff, the producer and director, said: “Our film has always felt tailor-made for a graphic novel adaptation, so we were stoked at the chance to stretch our collective vision with Josh and the team at Z2.”
The 100-page graphic novel will be released in a slipcased Deluxe Edition, with four art prints, a set of collectors cards and a set of temporary tattoos. Z2 will begin selling it in spring, and a standard-sized cover edition will be available via Amazon, Barnes & Noble and independent retailers and fine comic shops worldwide in the early fall.
“I’m so excited to see the boundaries of this universe we created together expand into a whole other arena with our partnership with Z2 to bring …And Out Comes the Wolf alive in a new way,” said co-creator Jason Neese.
His twin-brother and longtime collaborative partner Jamie Neese added: “Growing up comics were my entry point into my eventual obsession with cinema, so to now have the opportunity to watch Z2 take our film and metamorphose it into a graphic novel is beyond exciting.”

…And Out Comes the Wolf marks Peykoff’s directorial debut. The producer, director and writer founded Big Newport, with the Rancid film as its debut. He was an executive producer on Kevin Costner’s Western trilogy, Horizon: An American Saga.
The Neese brothers are currently developing TV drama The Devil Is All Around Us with Jason Momoa and On the Roam and has set up Secret Runners of New York at Nathan Fillion’s Collision 33. They will also direct their first thriller this year, Killbox, which is being shot in Ireland. They also wrote and directed the upcoming YA sci-fi podcast The Hard Drive for Voyage Media featuring Priah Ferguson (Stranger Things), and are in development with Rainn Wilson and Kas Kas on a television show called Black Star Canyon.
Mellon is known for directing Hulu’s Hit-Monkey Season 2 and was a long-time storyboard artist on FX animated comedy Archer. He has also worked on Dicktown, America: The Motion Picture, The Vampire Diaries, Black Lightning, Legacies, Dynasty and Bigger.
