Director David Ayer is set to reunite with Brad Pitt on the ambitious upcoming film Heart of the Beast, the star's follow-up to the biggest hit of his career, F1. Pitt and Ayer first worked together on the World War 2 film Fury, now renowned for featuring some of the most brutal warfare of any mainstream Hollywood project in years. Fury followed a group of soldiers assigned to one tank during a particularly pivotal period in enemy territory during WW2. Stories of the central cast having forged an unbreakable, almost soldier-like camaraderie on set still fill the air. Fury emerged as a critical and commercial hit, and it remains a favorite on home video more than a decade later. It's now available on Netflix, but the streamer has barred it for subscribers on the ad-supported tier.
A total of 145 titles have been blocked on the ad-supported tier in January, mainly due to rights issues. Released in 2014, Fury also featured Jon Bernthal, Michael Peña, Shia LaBeouf, and Logan Lerman, who served as the audience surrogate character in the film's harsh world. Ayer prided himself on his research and the film's period accuracy, which was praised by all. Fury's battle sequences, which featured period-accurate tanks, were also considered a highlight. The movie was produced on a reported budget of around $80 million, and it grossed over $210 million worldwide. Fury holds a "certified fresh" 75% critics' score and an even higher 84% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Overall, Fury is a well-acted, suitably raw depiction of the horrors of war that offers visceral battle scenes but doesn't quite live up to its larger ambitions."
David Ayer and Brad Pitt Are Both Coming Off Wins
Ayer fostered a similar atmosphere on his follow-up film, the ill-fated DC Extended Universe project Suicide Squad. The movie was famously tampered with in post-production, and Ayer has often called for the release of his original cut. Suicide Squad opened to poor reviews, but earned around $750 million at the global box office. Ayer's career took a hit after the film's release, but he has bounced back in recent years thanks to two movies starring Jason Statham, The Beekeeper and A Working Man, which grossed over $250 million in combined box office revenue. Heart of the Beast is expected to release this year. You can watch Fury on Netflix, but not on the ad-supported tier. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
