‘Mare of Easttown’ Finally Gets Major Season 2 Update — But There’s a Catch

In a recent interview, series star, Kate Winslet, revealed that there was a “strong likelihood” that cameras would be up and running on a long-awaited and hoped-for second season before 2027. Slated as a miniseries, the title came and went with just one season back in 2019, but, thanks to a fandom as dogged as Winslet’s titular detective, it sounds like Mare will soon be back on yet another case.

It all started a few months back when the Titanic star was in London working on the final touches of her directorial debut, Goodbye June, which is now streaming on Netflix. At that point in time, she revealed that “there was some conversations,” presumably between herself, series creator Brad Ingelsby, director Craig Zobel, and other top figures at HBO. She went on to share, “They were proper conversations around a timeframe when it could be possible. And so I think we probably will do it, and that’s the first time I’ve felt that.” Still, she was certain to not allude to anything happening immediately, adding that it “wouldn’t actually be this year, I reckon it would end up being 2027 to film it. There’s a strong likelihood it would film sometime in 2027.”

Why 'Mare of Easttown' Season 2 Now

With a near-perfect critic and audience approval score of 95% and 94%, respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes, Mare of Easttown was one of the biggest titles of 2019. The series certainly had a one-off vibe and was billed as a miniseries, with even Winslet previously shutting down the possibility of a sophomore installment saying she was “done, dusted, finished.” At the time, she said the only way she’d reprise her role as Mare Sheehan would be if “the story was too bloody good to resist, because it took a lot out of all of us filming Mare. We were filming during Covid. Brad’s the same. We’ll only do it again if the story’s compelling enough.” These words should be thrilling for fans who might have any doubts about the series standing up to its first season now knowing that the folks behind it are preparing to deliver a “compelling” and “bloody good” storyline. The first chapter of the series starred not only Winslet, but numerous other top-tier names like Julianne Nicholson, Jean Smart, Evan Peters, Angourie Rice, Guy Pearce and Cailee Spaeny, many of whom we'd expect to see return for the next batch of episodes.
