Schreiber and frontman Eugene Hütz have been friends for 20 years, and their new collaboration is glorious! Schreiber, who fans know from work like Ray Donovan and movies like Darren Aronofsky's 2025 film Caught Stealing, plays opposite Hütz as someone who comes to help him out, takes him to a diner, and walks off along a railroad together. "Ignition" is the third single off Gogol Bordello's new album We Mean It, Man! out February 13.
Schreiber and Hütz first met in Schreiber's directorial debut, Everything Is Illuminated, starring Elijah Wood and based on Jonathan Safran Foer's debut novel. But since then, the two have continued to work together, with Schreiber serving as executive producer on Scream of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story and the two joining together to make Ukrainian paska at the New York staple, Veselka. All this came before Schreiber's starring role in the music video for "Ignition."
Hütz explained their new album, We Mean It, Man! by talking about their inspirations. He said:
“Gogol Bordello has always been a cross-pollinator. And We Mean It, Man! brings all our original inspirations together more than any other: punk, gypsy music, hardcore, and techno. I conceived this album as a collaboration with one of my favorite producers of all time, Nick Launay, who’s been so much responsible for the flourishing of post-punk as a genre. In terms of boiled-down multimedia collage, this is the best Frankenstein we’ve done since Gypsy Punks. This is our post-punk groove revenge."
Ahead of the release, Schreiber shared, “My brother from another mother. Ridiculously insane with the heart, mind, and voice of a poet,” while Eugene Hütz added, “Ignition is about the hardest currency there is: lifelong friendships and trust—the people who will come pull you out of a ditch at 5 a.m. I didn’t want musicians’ faulty acting to obscure that, so I called my friend Liev, who is exactly the kind of actor who embodies it effortlessly and powerfully, because he’s exactly that kind of person. I value our friendship tremendously, and with the 20th anniversary of ‘Everything Is Illuminated,’ it felt like the right time for a meaningful celebration.”
Liev Schreiber Constantly Makes Exciting Career Moves
Schreiber is the kind of actor who always keeps fans on their toes. He went from movies like Taking Woodstock to roles in the X-Men movies as Sabertooth and more. When it comes to music videos, he's far from the first actor to dive into the art form. Stars like Diego Luna have been in music videos for Katy Perry, and Sissy Spacek and David Strathairn both starred in Rian Johnson's music video for LCD Soundsystem's "Oh Baby." But Schreiber's work in the music video for "Ignition" is exciting to see. It is a silent role, but you can feel Schreiber's connection to Hütz through their brief scenes together, and it all works in a fascinating blend of modern music video vibes with an '80s twist.
