EXCLUSIVE: Distribution Workshop has closed a sale to Japan on Juno Mak’s Cannes Midnight title Sons Of The Neon Night, which was been acquired by leading Japanese distributor Toho-Towa

The Hong Kong crime drama, starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, Sean Lau Ching-wan, Tony Leung Ka-fai and Louis Koo, will be released theatrically in Japan in the second quarter of 2026.

The film, which is Mak’s second as a director, received its world premiere at last year’s Cannes film festival in the Midnight section and was selected for the Gala section of the Tokyo International Film Festival, where it generated strong audience discussion. The film features an original music theme by the late Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Set in a surreal, snow-covered version of Hong Kong, the film opens with a gunfire in Causeway Bay followed by the death of a pharmaceutical tycoon in a hospital bombing. As the tycoon’s son seeks to wipe out the drug trade and build a drug-free new world, a war driven by blood-bound family ties and a power struggle between a drug empire and the authorities begins.

Toho-Towa president Toshi Yamasaki said: “This marks our second collaboration with Jeffrey Chan and his team, and it is a great pleasure for us to once again have the opportunity to work with such an outstanding team. We are truly excited to bring Sons Of The Neon Night, another one of their remarkable films, to audiences in Japan.”

Distribution Workshop previously collaborated with Toho-Towa on Chinese director Cheng Er’s period spy drama Hidden Blade, starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai.

Mak previously directed 2013 action horror film Rigor Mortis, which he also produced with Japanese horror master Takashi Shimizu.
