Jessica Simpson belts out Chicken of the Sea jingle as she embraces her iconic reality TV blunder

Jessica Simpson is fully leaning into the reality TV moment that followed her for decades - and this time, she’s singing along.

The pop star famously sparked pop-culture chaos during a 2003 episode of MTV’s Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica when she stared into a can of Chicken of the Sea tuna and asked, “Is this chicken what I have or is it fish?”

Simpson was just 23 at the time, newly married to Nick Lachey, and had no idea the off-the-cuff comment would become one of reality television’s most replayed blunders.

Now, more than 20 years later, she’s flipping the script and owning it.

On Tuesday, Simpson announced a new partnership with Chicken of the Sea, then shared a behind-the-scenes video a day later showing her in a recording studio belting out the brand’s jingle.

Dressed casually in a black top and jeans, the star grinned as she declared, 'I’m back on set with Chicken of the Sea,' proving she’s officially turned cringe into cash.

On Tuesday, Simpson announced a new partnership with Chicken of the Sea, then shared a behind-the-scenes video a day later showing her in a recording studio belting out the brand’s jingle

With her signature Southern twang, Simpson playfully launched into the tuna brand’s familiar jingle, crooning, 'Ask any mermaid you happen to see, what’s the best chicken?'

She immediately stopped herself, laughing as she realized she’d botched the lyrics.

'Wait - that’s not right,' she quipped, flashing a grin as the moment unfolded.

The star previously worked with the brand two years ago.

Including her 13-year-old daughter Maxwell, Simpson filmed a hilarious advertisement in 2024 poking fun at her viral question.

The ad, which was shared to social media, began with Simpson sitting on the couch eating a packet of the tuna.

'Mom, what are you eating in the packet,' Maxwell asks her mother, who explains she is snacking on something 'called Chicken of the Sea.'

'It's not really chicken — it's tuna,' Simpson tells her eldest child. 'So don't get confused by it.'

Maxwell then responds: 'Who would get confused by that?'

'No one. Not your Mom,' Simpson says, before letting out an awkward laugh.

At the end of the commercial, Simpson speaks to the audience directly as she assures them she knows 'it’s tuna' now after nearly two decades of ridicule over the flub.

Simpson shares Maxwell, along with daughter Birdie Mae, six, and son Ace, 12, with ex-husband Eric Johnson.

She and the 46-year-old former NFL star confirmed their split in January 2025 after 10 years of marriage.

Since then, Simpson has been forging a major comeback with a new album and a guest spot on Kim Kardashian's hit Hulu show All's Fair.

Earlier this week, Simpson revealed if she'd ever make her long-awaited return to reality TV by one day becoming The Bachelorette.

The superstar simply told TMZ on Monday: 'I have options, I'm good.'

Simpson's hilarious Chicken Of The Sea moment occurred during a 2003 episode of her short-lived MTV show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, starring herself and then-husband Nick Lachey

In the episode, Simpson, who was 23 at the time, ate a can of Chicken Of The Sea brand tuna and asked: 'Is this chicken what I have or is it fish?'

When the outlet brought up the 'huge ratings' her headlining the ABC dating competition would undoubtedly bring, Simpson scoffed: 'I don't care about that.'

Last month, Simpson reflected on the early days of her career as seen in a video shared by writer John Pascarella.

The Texas native admitted that she never felt 'good enough' when she came out with her hit songs I Wanna Love You Forever, I Think I'm In Love With You and Irresistible.

'My whole music career, you know I had a job, and it was to be a pop star and I tried but I will say when you're younger you just never feel good enough and it's okay to not feel good enough,' began the songbird.

'I want everyone to have grace for themselves when they just don't feel good enough sometimes. But I'm very good at convincing myself that my purpose is bigger than the moment that I'm in - a really hard time of my life I just kinda had to surrender myself to my intuition to the light that was in front of me and just focus on that.'

Now the artist is enjoying a spirited comeback with her new country music album Nashville Canyon Part I and II.

The star talked about something similar to Parade last year.

'Coming back to music is coming back home to myself,' the singer said. 'And maybe, for the first time, [I'm coming back] in the way that I feel I deserve.'

But there were bad vibes from her early days that made her feel like she was never on top. 'It was never about the music. It was never about my voice. It was never about my purpose. It was about chasing hits. It was about how many spins you got on the radio and just making sure they [the label] recouped. It was a job.'

She felt held back in her early days.

'Back in the day as a pop star, you could sing an R&B song, but I wasn't allowed to write [one]. It didn't feel authentic to who I was, but I had a job to do. And even if that job was highly competitive, it taught me a lot. My purpose had to stay intact, or I would've been taken down. Nothing was ever good enough.

'It became about the dance moves. It became about everything else that was manufactured. I'm just not a manufactured person.'

Now she is passionate about her self-produced Nashville Canyon EPs.

'I had to go back. I had to rediscover the child,' said the mom of three who grew up in Texas.

'I was a preacher's daughter, so I grew up with gospel, praise and worship, Christian music. I learned very young the power of music; it emotionally heals through the spirit of God. Music, for me, started as a prayer, and I feel like that's how the blues started.'
