After years of starring on opposite sides at DC and Marvel, Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista will finally join forces as co-leads in a feature film for the first time in Prime Video's new action comedy, The Wrecking Crew. Where their previous collaboration on Momoa's Apple TV series See cast them as warring brothers and the Dune movies pit them against one another as members of House Atreides and Harkonnen, this time around, they're playing estranged half-siblings brought back together to dig into the curious death of their father. The first trailer has now been released, highlighting their new dynamic as an unstoppable, mismatched buddy cop duo on a deeply personal mission. It's set to arrive on the streaming platform on January 28.
In The Wrecking Crew, Momoa plays Jonny, the loose cannon cop of the two half-brothers whose life is a bit of a mess at the beginning of the film. Bautista, meanwhile, is cast as James, a disciplined Navy SEAL family man who operates on an entirely different wavelength. Yet, as seen in so many other similar setups, their differences are also what make them so formidable. The film follows the pair on the streets of Hawaii as they set out in search of the truth behind their father's mysterious passing, unearthing long-buried secrets, testing their loyalties to one another, and confronting the trauma they both experienced from their dad's neglect. Wrecking anything and anyone that gets in their way in a hail of fists and bullets, Jonny and James unravel a conspiracy that threatens to rip their family apart.
Filmed in Oahu with Ángel Manuel Soto at the helm, the buzzy actioner was born out of a little wishcasting by Bautista on Twitter back in 2021. He originally put an idea out in the world for a buddy cop movie with Momoa, akin to Lethal Weapon, and with David Leitch directing. At the end of the day, he got two out of three of those wishes, but Soto was a welcome name to have on board, having previously helmed Blue Beetle. As a bonus, Jonathan Tropper, the creator of the Jon Hamm Apple TV series Your Friends & Neighbors, penned the script. In a conversation with Esquire, previewing the film, he said his time together with Momoa and Bautista on See, sharing their love for Shane Black movies, also helped inspire them to dive into Wrecking Crew. Momoa came up with the original idea of a familial focus on shared trauma over a neglectful childhood and siblings who come into their own and kick ass when they work together. According to the director, it was also the different personalities and strengths of the two stars that helped define their characters.
“Jason brings this wild, crazy, unpredictable side. And Dave brings this disciplined, methodical, slow-burn intensity to him. And well, they’re both big. They have a lot of gravity. As men, they couldn’t be more different from each other. So what you see in the movie is not that different from the way they are in real life.”
Who Else Is Starring in 'The Wrecking Crew'?
For all the emotional reckoning and sibling rivalry that will bring Jonny and James to blows on occasion,The Wrecking Crewis still, at its core, a bombastic action two-hander. Moreover, it has a strong supporting cast surrounding Momoa and Bautista.Claes Bang, who previously played the vengeful, usurping uncle inRobert Eggers' Norse epic,The Northman, will again be playing the villain standing against the pair. Rounding out the bunch areTemuera Morrison,Jacob Batalon,Frankie Adams, Miyavi, Stephen Root, and Morena Baccarin.
