A beloved Fantasy franchise returns this week as HBO's new show arrives in just four days. The Fantasy genre has grown over the past few years, with TV becoming the best landing spot for it. After all, many Fantasy stories lend themselves well to a longer format, though some can succeed in theaters as Fantasy movie franchises, like The Lord of the Rings.
Still, TV is where it's at for some of the most exciting releases in the genre over the past decade. Game of Thrones became one of the best TV shows of all time, even though its ending was disappointing. Then, House of the Dragon, the first of multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs, was released to critical acclaim. The Fantasy franchise now continues with a very different release.
Game Of Thrones' Next Spinoff Releases This Week
House of the Dragon might be set around 200 years before Game of Thrones, but both shows are very similar in tone, with expansive stories and dark political games. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms comes to offer something unique in the live-action Game of Thrones universe so far.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres on HBO on Sunday, January 18th, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. The show is set to air 6 episodes in its first season, with the following entries released weekly, every Sunday. 2026 is the year of Game of Thrones spinoffs, as House of the Dragon season 3 will also be released this year, arriving in the summer.
Why HBO's A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Is Worth Watching
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place closer to the Game of Thrones timeline, with the new HBO Fantasy series set 100 years before the original show. However, its tone is very different from that series, as the new HBO release explores Westeros with some levity. The show focuses on Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), a hedge knight, and his squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell).
While Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon focus on the characters who control Westeros, both politically and militarily, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms does away with that, taking the action to the streets of the continent. This is a fresh take on the Game of Thrones mythology, which is approached from the eyes of a common man and his travels.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms holds an 84% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. In ScreenRant's review of the HBO series, Jordan Williams praised the show for energizing the Game of Thrones franchise, claiming, "This isn't a show that's trying to be Game of Thrones in scale and darkness." A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is worth watching.
