Does a win by any other name still feel as sweet? Following a Best Actress win at the Critics Choice Awards last week, Hamnet actor Jessie Buckley clenched another win for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama at the 2026 Golden Globes on Sunday night.
Co-written and directed by Chloe Zhao, Hamnet is a fictionalized take on the life of William Shakespeare at the time he was writing his most famous play, Hamlet. It also follows the emotional family trauma Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his wife (Buckley) experienced during their marriage with the loss of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet (Jacobi Jupe) and all the other hardships that contributed to his art.
Buckley is the first Irish person to win in the category. During her speech, the actress paid homage to the diversity behind the camera on a film that showcases the domestic life of the British playwright. She also thanked her cast and crew from Zhao and the book’s author Maggie O’Farrell to Jacobi and Noah Jupe and Emily Watson.
“This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in but thank you Golden Globes,” Buckley said. “Focus [Features] and everybody who supported this film. Chloe, Paul, Maggie [O’Farrell, author], Emily [Watson], Jacobi [Jupe], Joe [Alwyn] and the 400 extras. I adore you. I would rave in that Globe for the rest of my life with you. It was such an extraordinary set to be part of because we were telling the story of probably the most famous Brit that ever lived and we had a Chinese director, a lot of Irish, a mostly Polish crew beside our British family.”
Buckley also humorously shouted out Polish key grip Tomasz Sternicki for making a delicious stew. She also went on to pay thanks to the “incredible women” nominated with her in the category calling Julia Roberts, “a hero” to all actresses. Hamnet also went on to win Drama Motion Picture.
