When Wonder Woman returns, there will be a major change, but it is only temporary. Gal Gadot will not return to DC as Wonder Woman, with Diana Prince being recast for James Gunn's DC Universe. Work has started on the DCU Wonder Woman movie, which is being written right now by Supergirl scribe Ana Nogueira. No release date has been announced.
While DC works out what to do with Wonder Woman in upcoming DCU movies, the character continues showing up monthly on the pages of DC Comics. Diana's latest run has changed her legacy forever with the introduction of Trinity, Wonder Woman's daughter. After surviving Mouse Man's trials, Diana is taking a breather in the comics, and that will come with a major change.
DC's Wonder Woman Will Have A New Writer For Two Issues
Tom King's first issue of Wonder Woman was released on September 19, 2023. Since then, the writer, who is one of the creatives spearheading James Gunn's live-action DC Universe, has penned all the issues of DC's main Wonder Woman book. Now, that is set to change. On January 21, King will be replaced by another writer for two issues.
Stephanie Williams is set to stand in for King for Wonder Woman #29-#30, which will be released in January and February. That is only a temporary change, though, as Tom King will be back on the title on March 18, 2026, when Wonder Woman #31 starts a new arc, which is dubbed "The Wonder War." Jeffrey Spokes stands in for artist Daniel Sampere over those two issues.
Williams is no stranger to Wonder Woman fans, as she has done right by another of DC's Wonder Women, Nubia, who plays a key role in the two issues. That, and the fact that artist Jeff Spokes gets to work on another major DC title after Red Hood was cancelled, makes me excited about Wonder Woman's upcoming issues, which will focus on Trinity meeting the Amazons of Themyscira.
Why Tom King Is Taking A Break From DC's Wonder Woman
While Stephanie Williams will be writing two issues of Wonder Woman, Tom King is not nearly close to being done with Diana Prince. Artist Daniel Sampere confirmed that on Instagram (via @Comfortable-Pie56/Reddit), saying, "We are taking a short break after 28 to focus on our next big arc coming. We are really far from being over."
That tracks, given that Tom King previously stated that he wanted to do over 100 issues of Wonder Woman, similarly to the work he had done on DC's main Batman book. As such, DC fans can enjoy a change of pace on the Wonder Woman title that brings a fresh take to Diana's stories, while Tom King returns for an ambitious Wonder Woman arc in March.
