A driver crashed into a terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on Friday evening. Six people were injured during the incident, and authorities have now made an arrest.

DTW Airport posted a brief statement about the crash on X, confirming that a vehicle drove into the entrance of the McNamara Terminal and smashed into a ticket counter at around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 23. "The driver is in custody, and the cause of the crash is unknown at this time," the statement reads. The airport also reported that the WCAA Fire Department treated six people at the scene.

A video shared by Sky News sheds more light on what happened: A black Mercedes smashed through the building and into the check-in area inside. Sky News reports that the vehicle struck the ticket counter and confirms that the impact injured six people.

The driver reportedly stepped out of the vehicle after it stopped and was quickly met by authorities at the scene. Officers allegedly ran toward the driver and placed him under arrest. The video footage shows debris and broken glass scattered across the terminal floor with the Mercedes' hood wedged against the counter.

Metro Detroit News also shared footage from another angle of multiple officers escorting a man from the premises, while a report by Fox 2 Detroit cites officials who believe the suspect was suffering from a "mental episode." It remains unclear what occurred before the crash, but a K9 unit searched the vehicle and found nothing inside.

Local outlet WXYZ interviewed several witnesses. One said the driver exited the vehicle with his hands up. He was talking, although it's unclear what he said. Another witness explained he was checking in as usual when he suddenly heard a loud noise. "We looked to the other side. Lord, behold, a car just ran through the door over there, slammed into the Delta desk," he explained. The witness noted how fast the response was: "It all happened in a second."

CBS News reports that authorities have not released the suspect's identity or confirmed whether there were any passengers in the vehicle. An airport official told the outlet that the driver has been petitioned for a medical evaluation. Delta Airlines also told CBS in a statement that emergency services checked three of their staff members after they encountered debris.

The Wayne County Airport Authority reportedly confirmed that it is now investigating the collision.
