Dafne Keen (“Deadpool & Wolverine,” “His Dark Materials”) looks set to take on her boldest role yet and play a sex worker in upcoming British crime romance “Driver” alongside Aidan Gillen (“Game of Thrones,” “Peaky Blinders”).

The film will mark the feature debut of award-winning filmmaker Patrick Ireland and is being produced by Playhouse Pictures.

Written by Ireland and Jessica Romagnoli, “Driver” is described as a “gritty British crime romance unfolding in the charged after-hours of London.” The story follows Trey, a withdrawn ex-con surviving as a night driver on the city’s margins, who forms a tentative and increasingly intimate bond with Camden (Dafne Keen), a sharp and restless young woman working as a call girl. As their connection deepens, the criminal world that governs them both begins to close in, led by Dickinson (Gillen), a calculating figure from Trey’s past whose influence is as inescapable as it is violent. As the synopsis reads: “Caught between loyalty, fear and the possibility of escape, Trey and Camden are forced to confront how much freedom truly costs in a system designed to keep people exactly where they belong.”

“I can’t wait to dive into such a complex role in Patrick’s honest, raw and compassionate story. Patrick finds light in the dark and this is a world I had to be a part of,” said Keen, who also serves as exec producer on the film.

“’Driver’ is a film about class, trauma and liberation,” said Ireland, who has a decade-long career spanning award-winning shorts (“One in a Million,” “Ill Fares the Land”) and broadcast work for ITV. “It’s a profoundly human story about the courage it takes to reclaim one’s life, and how, together, we might be able to confront a society that exploits us all.”

Playhouse Pictures is currently developing the project, with principal photography and additional casting to be announced in the coming months. Casting is being led by Ajo Kacmar of IO Casting (“High Wire,” “Dr Campbell”).

“’Driver’ embodies the bold, character-led filmmaking we champion at Playhouse Pictures. Patrick’s story confronts lives often overlooked, and with Dafne and Aidan, we’re building something unflinching, human and truly cinematic,” said producer and founder of Playhouse Pictures, Adriel Thomas.

Producer Byron Ross. added: “I knew from our time on ‘Star Wars’ that Dafne is a rare talent with absolute command of her craft. When Patrick shared his vision for Driver, it was obvious she was the one who could carry this role with the weight and truth it deserves.”

Keen is represented by Independent Talent Group, United Talent Agency, Liebman Entertainment, Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher, and Public Eye Communications.
Aidan Gillen is represented by Independent Talent Group, The Coronel Group, Gersh and McKuin Frankel Whitehead, LLP.
