Anime feature “Cosmic Princess Kaguya!” will launch exclusively on Netflix on Jan. 22, marking the directorial debut of Shingo Yamashita, known for his opening direction work on “Jujutsu Kaisen” Season 1, “Chainsaw Man” and “Urusei Yatsura.” A new trailer has been unveiled.
The film follows 17-year-old Tokyo high school student Iroha Sakayori, who balances part-time work and academics while finding respite watching popular streamer Yachiyo Runami, the administrator of the virtual space Tsukuyomi. Iroha frequents the platform where users pursue creative endeavors and play battle games. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers a telephone pole radiating iridescent light, from which an infant emerges. After bringing the baby home, Iroha witnesses her rapidly age into a girl her own age.
The grown Kaguya, developing a self-indulgent personality, persuades Iroha to help her launch a streaming career in Tsukuyomi. With Iroha serving as producer and songwriter and Kaguya as streamer and singer, the pair forms a close bond, unaware of ominous forces seeking to return Kaguya to the moon.
The Japanese voice cast includes Natsuyoshi Yuko as Kaguya, Anna Nagase as Iroha Sakayori, Saori Hayami as Yachiyo Runami, Miyu Irino as Akira Mikado, Yuma Uchida as Rai Komazawa, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Noi Komazawa, Yoshino Aoyama as Roka Ayatsumugi, Konomi Kohara as Mami Isayama, Rie Kugimiya as FUSHI, Fairouz Ai as Otako the Loyal Dog and Natsuki Hanae as Koto Okotteru.
The English dub features Jeannie Tirado as Kaguya, Dawn Bennett as Iroha Sakayori, Ryan Bartley as Yachiyo Mikado (with Frankie Kevich providing singing vocals), Max Mittelman as Akira Mikado, Casey Mongillo as Noi Komazawa, Cassandra Lee Morris as Roka Ayatsumugi, Anairis Quinones as Otako the Loyal Dog and Kieran Regan as Koto Okotteru.
Saeri Natsuo co-wrote the screenplay with Yamashita. Additional key staff includes Hechima handling Tsukuyomi character design, Nagae Akihiro on reality character design, Naoya Nakayama producing musical performances, Taichi Shishido as art director, and Conisch composing the score. The main theme song “Ex-Otogibanashi” is performed by Yachiyo Runami, voiced by Hayami.
The music-driven animation features songs by prominent Vocaloid producers ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra and yuigot. The story unfolds in a dreamlike virtual world called Tsukuyomi, exploring connections forged through music while blending emotional storytelling with dynamic 3D action and stylized visuals characteristic of Yamashita’s work.
Studio Colorido, the animation house behind “Penguin Highway” and “A Whisker Away,” produced the film in collaboration with Yamashita’s newly formed Studio Chromato.
Colorido & Twin Engine Partners produced the film, with animation production by Studio Colorido and Studio Chromato.
