Apocalyptic weather bit into box office this weekend with distributors citing stay-at-home orders and hundreds theater closures across a big chunk of the U.S. It’s very tough out there, worse for some than others.

“The weather clearly was big factor this weekend and impacted the box office significantly for everyone. Hopefully the industry will get some of this missed demand back during this week and next weekend if the weather improves,” says Chris McGurk, CEO of Cineverse today as its Return To Silent Hill franchise reboot opened at no. 7 with $3.25 million at 1,850 theaters.

With a total investment of only $3.5 million, he said, “it will be very profitable for us and a great addition to our library and streaming channels. We went out with a more limited run footprint than many of the other titles in the marketplace and are happy that we have a top 10 release and a solid per screen average on a very tough weather weekend.”

The film has some blistering reviews but “Love it or hate it, the video game fans want to see the film and talk about it and that will continue to make it a great title for us in home entertainment,” he said.
