EXCLUSIVE: Filming is underway in the UK on Studiocanal’s Ian Charleson film, Elsinore, which has added a bevvy of British talent to its cast.
Joining Andrew Scott and Olivia Colman are Billie Piper (Doctor Who), Johnny Flynn (Ripley), Luke Thompson (Bridgerton), BAFTA winner Monica Dolan (Mr Bates Vs The Post Office), Olivier winner Juliet Stevenson (Bend It Like Beckham), Joe Locke (Heartstopper Forever), BAFTA winner Adeel Akhtar (Sherwood), Matthew Beard (The Testament of Ann Lee), David Dawson (The Last Kingdom), Kadiff Kirwan (Slow Horses), Dickie Beau (Bohemian Rhapsody) and BAFTA winner Peter Mullan (Ozark).
Piper reunites with director Simon Stone following her performance in Yerma at The Young Vic, which saw her win an Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress.
Scott stars as Ian Charleson, the Chariots Of Fire and Gandhi actor who who faced incredible odds while preparing to give the performance of his life in Hamlet at the National Theatre in London. A noted stage and screen actor, Charleson was diagnosed with HIV in 1986, and died in 1990 at the age of just 40. He requested that it be announced after his death that he had died of AIDS, to publicise the condition. It was the first celebrity death in the UK openly attributed to the illness.
Studiocanal, LD Entertainment, Lucky Red and Magnolia Mae Films are producing Elsinore, which is shooting on locations across the UK. Pic is written by BAFTA winner and Golden Globe nominee Stephen Beresford (Pride).
Producers are Andrea Occhipinti of Lucky Red, Gabrielle Tana of Magnolia Mae Films, along with Pete Shilaimon and Mickey Liddell of LD Entertainment, Stefano Massenzi and Carolyn Marks Blackwood, and Andrew Scott.
Studiocanal is financing the film and LD Entertainment pre-bought North America. Ron Halpern, EVP Global Production and Joe Naftalin, SVP Global Production & Head of UK Film Production are overseeing for Studiocanal, which will release theatrically in their territories of the UK, France, Germany, Poland, Benelux, Australia and NZ with distribution by Lucky Red in Italy. Studiocanal is handling worldwide sales and will be shopping at next month’s EFM.
