BAFTA Nominations Snubs & Suprises: Chase Infiniti, Odessa A’zion & Brit Indie ‘I Swear’ Feel The Love But ‘Wicked’s Tough Awards Run Continues

2 hours ago 2

This morning’s BAFTA nominations had a distinctly Oscar feel to them with many of the main categories reflecting the U.S. Academy’s choices from last week. You can see the full list of noms here.

There was a sprinkling of British independent flavour, however, with movies such as I, Swear and The Ballad Of Wallis Island scoring well.

There were few major snubs but a handful of minor surprises. BAFTA publishes longlists ahead of time so some of the drama is removed at that stage. Six nominees in the acting categories also lessens the chances for obvious snubs. That said, there was an element of divergence from the Academy, and some Brits broke through, which should be expected from the Brit votership. Wagner Moura’s absence from BAFTAs acting longlist remains one of the bigger surprises in the acting categories.

See below for our BAFTA snubs and surprises.

SURPRISES

I Swear

The British indie pic was shortlisted for six categories and made it into an impressive five categories today. The tourettes drama continues to punch above its weight for Studiocanal. Lead Robert Aramayo made the Best Actor category.

Chase Infiniti

One of the surprise omissions from the Oscar nominations is back in the awards fray at the BAFTAs.

Odessa A’Zion

After a breakout performance in Marty Supreme many expected an Oscar nomination but she also missed out. She returns in the BAFTA acting categories.

Emily Watson

The acclaimed screen vet hasn’t been a regular fixture on awards lists this season but gets a first BAFTA film nomination in 25 years for Hamnet.

Jesse Plemons

Plemons scored rave reviews at Venice for Bugonia but didn’t make it onto the Oscar nominations last week. He returns to the awards scene at the BAFTAs.

SNUBS

Wicked

The musical sequel had scored eight longlist mentions, but today only heard its name called in costume and hair and makeup. The film was the big snub at the Oscars last week and its disappointing awards season continues with only two nominations today.

Nuremberg

The Russell Crowe starrer had scored a healthy five BAFTA longlist mentions so UK distributor Sky Cinema will be disappointment that it pitched a shutout.

Urchin

Harris Dickinson’s Cannes title was a festival darling and made the longlist. It had a higher profile than films such as The Ceremony or A Want In Her but was beaten out in the Outstanding Debut category.

The Voice Of Hind Rajab

The film, of course, did hear its name called today, just as it did last week at the Oscars. That makes the film’s longtime snub by U.S. distributors all the more difficult to reconcile. We wrote about that here.
