Carolyn Jenkins is a voracious consumer of film and television. She graduated from Long Island University with an MFA in Screenwriting and Producing where she learned the art of character, plot, and structure. The best teacher is absorbing media and she spends her time reading about different worlds from teen angst to the universe of Stephen King.

The Pitt has had some unavoidable comparisons to ER, especially considering Noah Wyle’s starring role in the new medical drama. Dr. Michael Robinavitch is not a stand-in for Dr. John Carter, and this is made even more clear in the new season of the Emmy-winning series. Season 2 of The Pitt opens up with a sequence that purposefully mirrors Dr. Robby’s Season 1 introduction.

The ER doctor makes the same journey to the hospital he did in the series opener, but this time, astride a motorcycle with no helmet. At first glance, this could just be one way to reintegrate the audience with a character who is confident in the way he operates at his place of work. His combination of sunglasses and hoodie is a classic way to convey a cool attitude, but this time, it communicates something much more dire.

Robby’s Missing Helmet is a Signal to ‘The Pitt’ Audience

Time was, an opening shot with the main character could just be taken at face value. However, The Pitt has premiered in a new era of the medical drama genre and is more confident in telling stories with visual cues. The series trusts that audiences will understand the underlying tension of the series with a simple sequence. In the opening scene, Dr. Robby rides to work on a motorcycle without a helmet, which is not just a way to introduce the character for a new season, but to show what Robby's state of mind is.

His decision not to wear a helmet is juxtaposed with that of an upcoming patient who is brought in following a crash on their motorcycle. This scene establishes two things. One, it is legal in Pennsylvania to ride a motorcycle without wearing a helmet as long as other safety measures are put in place. Two, Robby is lying.

When his colleagues make a point about the dangers of Robby riding a motorcycle, he insists that he wears a helmet. Now the audience understands that he is lying, and this visual cue is about much more than looking cool. These factors indicate there is something more going on beneath the surface, which is unsurprising, considering what Robby has gone through in the past season.

‘The Pitt’ Sets Up Robby’s Vulnerable Mental State In Season 2

The Season 2 opener of The Pitt effortlessly sets up where Robby is going in the new season, but that wasn’t always on the menu. At the time of filming, the production was unsure whether they would show Robby with or without a helmet. This decision came down to the fear of portraying Robby a certain way. Even though it airs on HBO, full of complex characters, the production was still uncertain about portraying the lead character as anything less than heroic. One of the people on the side of the more edgy portrayal was Noah Wyle himself. He insisted that the character not wear the helmet, and was interested more in the character’s arc throughout the season.

“I created a character that is now extremely sentimentally loved by a lot of people,” Wyle noted in a recent interview. “And I want to take that sentimentality and play with it a little bit.” The idea added a sense of danger to the character already on the brink.

There is no question as to why Robby is taking such risks. After a dramatic first season of The Pitt, Robby is under immense pressure. The freshman season of the series establishes that working through the COVID-19 crisis affected him on a personal level. He lost his mentor, and that was before the infamous mass casualty event that happens later in the season. Robby is further traumatized by the loss of people close to him, further exacerbating his issues with anxiety. Now that fans can see him again in the new season, it is obvious he isn’t much better.

Robby’s planned three-month sabbatical should be a time for him to decompress. Instead, it is laced with foreboding since he is planning on taking a cross-country road trip on the back of a motorcycle. His colleagues sense this, noting the dangers of motorcycle travel, which they see firsthand at work. Robby is lying about using a helmet, making it clear that his future is uncertain. This arc could prove to be even more devastating for the doctor whose mental issues are at their peak.
