Inside the 2026 Golden Globes Gift Bags Worth Nearly $1 Million
All the world's a stage—and Hamnet has taken yet another.
After facing off against Sentimental Value, Frankenstein, It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value and Sinners, it was the Shakespeare-inspired film that took home the prize for Best Picture Drama at the 2026 Golden Globes on Jan. 11. (See all the winners from the show here.)
Director Chloé Zhao was speechless after Hamnet was called out at the ceremony—hosted by Nikki Glaser—but regained her composure to tell a special story about star Paul Mescal while accepting the prize onstage at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
"Paul said some to something to me this morning," she said. "He said that making Hamnet made him realize that the most important thing of being an artist is learning to be vulnerable enough to allow ourselves to be seen for who we are—not who we ought to be—and to give ourselves fully to the world, even the parts of ourselves that we're ashamed of, that we're afraid of, that are imperfect."
Best Picture Drama wasn't the only category in which Hamnet took gold, as Jessie Buckley also won for Best Female Actor – Motion Picture – Drama for playing Agnes Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare in the family drama.

And perhaps it's exactly that mindset that earned Chloé praise from producer Steven Spielberg, who shouted her out while he took a turn at the mic.
"I love the book, but I felt there was really only one filmmaker on the face of the planet who could tell this story of Agnes and Will and the spirits of the earth and the forest," Spielberg said onstage. "And that was the exceptional, exceptional, exceptional Chloé Zhao."
