Tony Dokoupil‘s official debut on CBS Evening News on Monday drew almost 4.4 million viewers, down from past recent introductions of the network anchors of the broadcast.

The CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil drew about 4.37 million viewers, compared to 7.21 million for NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas and 8.24 million for ABC World News Tonight with David Muir, according to Nielsen.

In the 25-54 demo, Dokoupil’s newscast averaged 596,000, compared to 1.1 million for NBC Nightly News and 1.02 million for World News Tonight.

Dokoupil’s debut was off by 23% from the same day last year, when the CBS Evening News averaged 5.69 million on Jan. 6, 2025. It also posted 805,000 in the 25-54 demo then.

The debut also drew fewer viewers than the premiere of a revamped CBS Evening News on Jan. 27, with John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois anchoring. That broadcast drew 5.35 million viewers and 774,000 in the 25-54 demo. It also was down from Norah O’Donnell’s debut in 2019 and Jeff Glor in 2017, although networks have been grappling with overall linear TV audience erosion.

That said, the debut did beat the Q4 numbers for CBS Evening News, which averaged 4.03 million viewers and 502,000 in the 25-54 demo. Dickerson and DuBois departed the network last month. CBS said that Dokoupil’s debut was up 9% in viewers and 20% in the demo versus the season-to-date average.
