Martin Scorsese might have Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan might have Cillian Murphy, but today, we’re celebrating the collaboration between Steven Knight and Tom Hardy. Over more than a decade, the director and actor have paired up to bring audiences some incredibly intense action-heavy dramas and thrillers on big and small screens alike. As they say, first impressions are incredibly important, so, it would stand to reason that their very first collaboration — on 2013’s Locke — was the beginning of a beautiful creative partnership. Soon, audiences who haven’t seen the pulse-pounding car-centered thriller will have the chance to stream it completely free of charge when it arrives on Tubi on February 1.
Filming in a single room or area can either be a dream or a nightmare — just ask The Room’s Tommy Wiseau. Yet, Knight fully stuck the landing when he placed Hardy behind the driver’s seat in Locke and didn’t move the camera from within the confines of the four doors. Even better, the casting team still went full-on pedal to the metal when filling out the call sheet, not letting the fact that no one but Hardy gets screentime stand in the way of nabbing top-tier performers to be on the other end of the phone with the main character. Joining Hardy in the most unnerving ride of his life is a lineup that also includes Olivia Colman, Bill Milner, Tom Holland, Andrew Scott, Ben Daniels and Ruth Wilson.
Whether or not he realizes it, Ivan Locke (Hardy) has a long night ahead of him. Although he’s meant to be on the way home to watch a football game with his family, he finds himself cruising towards London to instead be present at the birth of his daughter from an affair he had months earlier. Over the course of his drive from Birmingham to London, Ivan has a multitude of calls between him and his wife, his sons, the mother of his soon-to-be child, his co-worker, and his boss, resulting in one of the most emotionally and mentally draining nights of his life.
Steven Knight and Tom Hardy’s Follow-Up Projects
After finding success through Locke, Knight and Hardy went on to work alongside one another a handful of other times, beginning with the latter joining the cast of the former’s beloved drama series, Peaky Blinders, in a supporting role. Just a few years later, Knight helped Hardy and his father, Chips Hardy, see their drama series, Taboo, realized at BBC One, where it ran for an eight-episode season.
Head over to Tubi on February 1 to see where it all began for Knight and Hardy when Locke begins streaming for free.
