Tom Hanks will reprise his role as Woody in Toy Story 5 this summer, but before he returns to one of his most iconic roles, fans are revisiting an underrated Hanks classic on streaming. 27 years ago, Hanks starred alongside David Morse and the late Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile, a prison drama following a death-row guard who discovers that a gentle giant in his charge possesses an unusual gift. The Green Mile is streaming on Peacock in the U.S., and globally, the film has re-entered the VOD top 10 in Germany and several other countries.
The Green Mile was met with a moderately positive reception from critics, but it’s a bona fide audience favorite. The film sits at a Certified Fresh 78% from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, but a 94% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. This would be Verified Hot if it came out after Rotten Tomatoes launched this new metric. The Green Mile reportedly cost around $60 million to make, which was viewed as a major risk in the late 90s, but it paid off. The film grossed $286 million worldwide and continues to generate profits as a streaming title.
Frank Darabont wrote and directed The Green Mile, which is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. Five years before The Green Mile, Frank Darabont directed another Stephen King film, The Shawshank Redemption, widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. Darabont most recently directed two episodes of the fifth and final season of Stranger Things on Netflix.
When Does Tom Hanks’ Next Movie Come Out?
Tom Hanks will next be seen reprising his role as Woody in Toy Story 5, which is coming to theaters on June 19. His longtime co-star Tim Allen will also voice Buzz Lightyear in the film, after briefly passing the role to Chris Evans. Hanks is also due to star in a sequel to Greyhound, his hit WWII movie that was released straight to streaming on Apple TV. Stephen Graham is also expected back in the sequel, and Hanks is once again writing the script. Greyhound 2 will likely begin filming soon, but it doesn’t have an official release date.
