Steam is constantly surprising the gaming community with everything it offers, sometimes to an exhausting degree. For instance, there is no shortage of Minecraft-adjacent games, but there's plenty that dive into other subgenres too.

In this case, you can pick up a game on Steam now that resembles both Minecraft and State of Decay. It's also free and has tens of thousands of "very positive" reviews from users.

Unturned Is A Free Zombie Survival Game

It's Reminiscent Of State Of Decay's Setup

Unturned Fishing Dock

Released by Smartly Dressed Games, Unturned is available as a free-to-play game on Steam, and has garnered over 200,000 "very positive" leaning user reviews. Your job is to both survive and rebuild through the lens of a world that, aesthetically, is similar to Minecraft's voxel style. The premise says it all: "You're a survivor in the zombie-infested ruins of society, and must work with your friends and forge alliances to remain among the living."

The game is fairly packed, as you have the ability to forage for food, fight zombies, interact with NPCs to rebuild society, buff up your base for defense, and play online in a PvPvE setting. You'll do all this across five official maps (Prince Edward Island (PEI), The Yukon, Washington, Russia, Hawaii, Germany) and one curated community sandbox.

It's still getting new content too, as a recent community-created map is coming, which offers "sprawling marshlands and forests covered in constant ashfall." As a coastal map, it'll present tons of hazards, as well as its own secret locations and progression system. It's also still receiving engine, quality-of-life, and visual upgrades through official patches.

It's Basically Minecraft With Added Zombies

That Probably Sounds Good To A Lot Of People

Unturned Campfire

If you're keen on building things and are tired of Minecraft, this might be an outlet for that. Building doesn't just involve blocks or accessories either, as you can create traps or barricades, or craft vehicles that are more like moving fortresses.

In fact, vehicles are a big part of the game, and you can use tanks, quads, snowmobiles, helicopters, seaplanes, fighter jets, jetskis, and hovercraft. There's a lot of imagination at play with Unturned, especially given all the updates it's had over the years.

As we kick off 2026 and wait for the bigger releases to come out, there's plenty of play on Steam and other platforms. Given that some of them support mods, you can theoretically tweak them to your heart's content. With the rising cost of games (and the chance that some AAA titles could break the $70 mark later in the year), free is always good.
