The Naked Gun reboot starring Liam Neeson is unarguably one of the best comedy movies of the last decade. The heartwarming movie with a gag every minute left audiences in splits and brought back a flavor of comedy that was missing from the big screen for a long time. Directed by Akiva Schaffer, the movie got both critical acclaim and the audience's love. After a good theatrical run, the movie is now doing wonders on streaming. The success means there should be another installment in the long-running series, but the recent Paramount merger with Skydance has put the franchise's future into uncertainty, per Schaffer.
The Naked Gun reboot saw Lieutenant Frank Drebin Jr (Neeson) become a police officer like his legendary father and attempt to save the police department from shutting down by solving a case. Neeson’s deadpan performance garnered a lot of praise, and he brilliantly fits the absurdly humorous tone of the feature. Speaking of another installment, Schaffer told CBR, "We are not planning another." Further explaining:
"I don't know if you heard about Paramount kind of changed owners. It was maybe something. It was about seven days after the movie came out, and so, you know, we're waiting to hear from see if they would want it."
But not all hope is lost, given that the team has many ideas in place for another installment, if the opportunity presents itself, "So Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who wrote the script with me, they do have a list of gags," Scaffer teased. The film's producer, Erica Huggins, added, "We have a big idea that we had talked about." To which Schaffer agreed, adding: "Yeah, we've got a few."
'The Naked Gun' Is a Hit
The movie, following the antics of Frank Drebin Jr., earned $102.1 million worldwide on a $42 million budget. After its theatrical run, the movie also saw a positive response on VOD and streaming charts, frequently appearing on various top 10 lists. It garnered much praise for its pacing, story, and gags, garnering an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics and a 72% rating from the fans. Along with Neeson, the movie also featured the talents of Pamela Anderson as Beth Davenport, Paul Walter Hauser as Capt. Ed Hocken Jr., Danny Huston as Richard Cane, CCH Pounder as Chief Davis, and Kevin Durand as Sig Gustafson, among others.
