And, don’t worry: There’s a third book, too.
Hot off the success of the first in the soon-to-be film franchise, Paul Feig’s “The Housemaid” is officially getting a sequel. Lionsgate announced on Tuesday morning that Feig’s latest, based on the Freida McFadden novel of the same name and starring Amanda Seyfried, Sydney Sweeney, Brandon Skelnar, and Michele Morrone, is prepping for a new entry in the new year.
Per Lionsgate, the holiday smash hit “has taken in over $75 million domestically in its first 17 days of release and $133 million worldwide with international territories continuing to roll out through January,” and will now capitalize on that success with a planned 2026 production start for McFadden’s second “Housemaid” book, “The Housemaid’s Secret.”
The film stars Sweeney as the titular housemaid, the down-on-her-luck Millie, who is hired to clean the palatial home of the wealthy (and very fucked up) Winchester family, including a stand-out Seyfried as the unhinged (maybe?) Nina, with Skelnar as her husband, Andrew. Morrone is Enzo, their shifty-eyed landscaper with secrets of his own.
The studio adds that the sequel has been in development for the past few months, and will see the return of screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted “The Housemaid.” Also back: producers Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, producers Feig and Laura Fischer of Feig’s Pretty Dangerous Pictures, with Hidden Pictures’ Carly Elter and Alex Young, and star Sweeney executive producing. McFadden will also serve as an executive producer. The film is “being developed with an eye for director Paul Feig and stars Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone to return.”
“It’s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly — and audibly — to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of ‘The Housemaid’ and want to know what happens next,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson in an official statement. “We believed in these stories from the very beginning, and we are beyond excited to bring the next chapter of Millie’s story to life on-screen in collaboration with our outstanding creative partners Todd, Paul, Laura, Carly, Alex, and Sydney. ‘The Housemaid’s Secret’ is another wildly thrilling book in Freida’s series that has captivated readers worldwide, and we look forward to translating it into a similarly rousing and riotous moviegoing experience.”
The second book in McFadden’s trilogy follows Millie after her tenure with the Winchesters ends, and she takes on a new job, and, well, that’s just about all we can say without spoiling it and its predecessor. And, yes, as promised, there is a third book in the series, “The Housemaid Is Watching,” which puts a twist on the kind of action that plays out in the first two books.
“The Housemaid” book series has sold over 12 million units across all titles, with the second book, “The Housemaid’s Secret,” accounting for four million of those. Translated into 40 languages, the book has been a New York Times bestseller for 65 weeks and counting and won the 2023 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Thriller.
The film will be overseen by Lionsgate’s Chelsea Kujawa, who also oversaw the first film and brought the project into the studio, alongside Maria Ascanio. Robert Melnik negotiated the deals for the studio.
