One of Taylor Sheridan's best series has been cancelled way too soon, and its confirmed ending is set to disappoint fans in one crucial way. Sheridan is one of the most important creators working in Hollywood right now. His work on the Yellowstone TV show franchise and with movies like Hell or High Water started a new wave of Westerns.
Sheridan has also found success in the world of crime dramas and spy thrillers, with two of the creator's most popular shows being Tulsa King and Lioness. Another series that feels closer in tone to those projects than the upcoming Yellowstone spinoffs has sadly been cancelled, and it cements how Sheridan's endgame for it will sadly never come to fruition.
Taylor Sheridan's Hit Crime Thriller Series Will Not End On His Terms
Dennis P. Mong Jr./Paramount+ ©2025 Viacom International IncMayor of Kingstown is one of the best crime thriller series released in the last few years. Each season of the show has gotten better, with Mayor of Kingstown season 4 achieving a perfect 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show is also a streaming hit, as are most Sheridan series, showcasing the strength of the creator's TV empire.
For instance, according to FlixPatrol, the dark series is Paramount+'s 6th most-watched TV show worldwide right now, nearly a month after the season 4 finale. Sadly, that was not enough for the show to survive. Mayor of Kingstown has been renewed for a fifth and final season. The news comes after it was revealed that Sheridan would go from Paramount to NBCUniversal.

Mayor Of Kingstown Cast Guide: Every New & Returning Character In Season 4
Mayor of Kingstown season 4 is introducing several new characters alongside the returning cast for another season of the Taylor Sheridan crime drama.
However, that will only happen in three years, and it has been revealed that Mayor of Kingstown will end against Taylor Sheridan's wishes. To add insult to injury, the crime thriller's final season is a shortened one, with only 8 episodes after four seasons with 10 episodes.
Additionally, co-creator Hugh Dillon previously told ScreenRant that Sheridan planned for Mayor of Kingstown to end with season 7. The series will now end two seasons short of that goal, making it impossible for Sheridan's full creative vision for the Jeremy Renner show to be fully realized onscreen.
Mayor Of Kingstown Fans At Least Have One Positive To Look Forward To
Based on that, there is no other way to view Mayor of Kingstown ending with season 5 as anything other than disappointing. Sheridan had plans up until season 7, and the show had just hit its best run of episodes yet. Thankfully, there is at least one piece of good news for fans of the crime thriller series despite its cancellation.
Mayor of Kingstown is confirmed to start streaming on Netflix in the United States at some point in 2026. As the most popular streaming service out there, Netflix will surely boost the series' reach to a whole new set of global viewers. While it is unlikely that Mayor of Kingstown could reverse its cancellation, that path offers a slight chance, or at the very least, a new home to watch the show.
