The Housemaid continues to do well at the box office as a much-needed commercial success for Sydney Sweeney, now overtaking some of her previous highest-grossing movies. Directed by Paul Feig and also starring Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins, The Housemaid has grossed $133.2 million worldwide, per The Numbers.

The Housemaid has ended Sweeney's disappointing box office streak of 2025, after her previous three releases from last year — Eden, Americana, and Christy — grossed less than $5 million worldwide combined. Premiering in cinemas on December 19, 2025, The Housemaid had the noteworthy advantage of being based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Freida McFadden.

By now, The Housemaid has well surpassed what was previously Sweeney's third-highest-grossing movie worldwide, 2024's notorious superhero entry Madame Web. Starring Sweeney, Dakota Johnson, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O'Connor, Madame Web was critically panned but still managed to gross $100.2 million. However, on a reported budget of $80-100 million, it was a commercial flop as well.

Surpassing Madame Web by more than $30 million, The Housemaid now ranks at No. 3 on the all-time worldwide charts for Sweeney's career. At No. 2 is her smash hit rom-com with Glen Powell, Anyone But You, which grossed $218.9 million. No. 1 is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with $377.4 million, though Sweeney only plays a small role in the Tarantino Best Picture nominee.

Meanwhile, Deadline reports that The Housemaid has an "excellent hold" at the domestic box office, grossing an additional $14.8 million over the weekend, a very small drop of three percent from last week, bringing its domestic total to $75.7 million as it heads into its third week in theaters. It maintains its No. 3 spot at the domestic box office after billion-dollar movies Avatar: Fire and Ash and Zootopia 2.

The Housemaid is also notably ranking above the buzzy Oscar movie Marty Supreme, even though Timothée Chalamet's outing broke box office records for A24. A few new releases will shake up the box office in the coming weeks, including Primate, Greenland 2: Migration, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Mercy, and H Is for Hawk, to name a few potential hits.

Sweeney is wrapping up a difficult year, which saw her sports biopic Christy miss at becoming a serious awards contender, but The Housemaid is a better, decently successful note to end it on. With a reported budget of $35 million, $130 million is more than enough needed to break even, making this a strong hit for Lionsgate as well as Sweeney and the rest of the cast and crew.
