Having spent around 20 days in theaters worldwide, The Housemaid is on the verge of passing the $150 million mark at the global box office. The erotic thriller is also still on course to hit the $200 million mark globally, making it star Sydney Sweeney's first film to do so since Anyone But You, which was released in 2023. Sweeney had been having a difficult run since then, as had the studio Lionsgate. But The Housemaid has turned things around for them in a grand fashion. The movie is based on a bestseller by Freida McFadden, and is also on the verge of overtaking the decade-old thriller The Girl on the Train. But it's still a long way away from matching the performance of the similarly-targeted It Ends with Us.

Directed by Paul Feig, who's still best known for his comedy movies, The Housemaid has entered an elite box office list. This week, The Housemaid became one of the 100 highest-grossing thrillers in global box office history. Over the course of its run, it has overtaken memorable thriller films such as Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, Steven Spielberg's Munich, and Tony Scott's Man on Fire. Recently, it overtook the Gerard Butler vehicle Angel Has Fallen, and the Liam Neeson-led hit Unknown. The Housemaid is currently the 98th-highest-grossing thriller of all time; in order to enter the top 50, it would need to overtake the $212 million haul of District 9. In order to hit the $200 million mark at the global box office, it would need to overtake The Hunt for Red October.

A Sequel to 'The Housemaid' Is in the Works

As far as erotic thrillers are concerned, The Housemaid has already overtaken the likes of Body Heat and Wild Things, and will soon pass Julia Roberts' Sleeping with the Enemy. In order to overtake Presumed Innocent, it would need to gross over $221 million worldwide, and in order to overtake the genre classic Fatal Attraction, it would need to gross around $320 million, which might be out of its reach. The highest-grossing erotic thriller of all time is Basic Instinct, which made $352 million worldwide. Also starring Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, The Housemaid is sitting at a "certified fresh" 73% critics' score and a "verified hot" 92% audience score on RT, where the crowd's consensus reads, "Juicy and satisfying pop fare, The Housemaid offers a tantalizing peek through the proverbial peephole, sure to delight both newcomers and fans of the novel." A sequel was recently announced with Sweeney and Feig set to return. You can watch The Housemaid in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
