Makuochi Echebiri is a News Writer for Collider. He has been interested in creative writing from as far back as high school, and he would consume pretty much anything that’s film or TV. However, his truest love lies in the presence of historical epics and thrillers.
Lured by the brilliance of Middle Earth from an early age both in print and on screen, his palate has since expanded to other realms including Westeros, Kattegat among others. He also possesses a great appetite for the stories that emanate from the vastness of space. Even though he is no Avenger.
Obsessed with storytelling and having works of his own that have yet to make it to print, he is content to use that ability to communicate to as many as are reachable. In his spare time, he looks out for avenues where he can aid people aside from his plans to reign over this earthly realm. Yes…you heard that first here.
After a worrying dry spell, Sydney Sweeney is back in winning form at the box office. Her latest release, the erotic thriller The Housemaid, has already grossed over $150 million worldwide, outpacing several classics of its genre. While it hasn’t yet surpassed her previous major box office hit, Anyone But You ($250 million), the film has successfully reversed her cinematic fortunes. Sweeney had been coming off a series of underperforming releases, including Americana, the neo-Western crime thriller co-starring Paul Walter Hauser. Despite premiering to rave reviews at the 2023 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival, Americana struggled at the box office. Thankfully, streaming has given the film a second life, allowing it to find the audience and recognition it truly deserves.
Americana earned a mere $500,000 at the box office, a clear bomb against its $9 million budget. But the story has been very different on streaming, where the film has dominated nearly every platform it’s appeared on. After its theatrical run, it became available on services like Rakuten TV and Chili TV, often featuring in the charts, and at one point even outranking the legendary dystopian thriller V for Vendetta. The new year has expanded its streaming presence to platforms like HBO Max and Starz, with the latter seeing Americana emerge as one of its most popular titles since January 3. Its success has also crossed borders, landing in the Top 10 of most-watched movies on HBO Max in Belgium. For those yet to check out the film, the synopsis reads;
"A gallery of dynamic characters clash over the possession of a rare Native American artifact in this wildly entertaining modern-day western. After the artifact falls onto the black market, a shy waitress with big dreams (Sydney Sweeney) teams up with a lovelorn military veteran (Paul Walter Hauser) to gain possession of it, putting them in the crosshairs of a ruthless criminal (Eric Dane) working on behalf of a Western antiquities dealer (Simon Rex). Bloodshed ensues when others join the battle, including the leader of an indigenous group (Zahn McClarnon) and a desperate woman fleeing her mysterious past (Halsey)."
What's Sydney Sweeney Doing Next?
Sweeney remains one of the most in-demand talents working today, with several highly anticipated projects in the pipeline. Following the success of The Housemaid, a sequel to the movie based on Freida McFadden’s novel series has been announced — and if it replicates the original’s performance, a full trilogy could be on the cards. But way before that, Sweeney will be seen in The Devil Wears Prada 2, a project generating significant buzz that could further extend her box office streak. Later in April, she returns to her starring role in the much-anticipated third season of Euphoria. Other upcoming projects include a live-action Gundam adaptation, a remake of the cult 1968 sci-fi classic Barbarella, and an adaptation of the video game Split Fiction.
Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming reports and updates on Sweeney's projects.
