Already off and running on digital, The Running Man has been enjoying a fresh set of new eyes in the weeks since leaving cinemas. Edgar Wright’s vibrant, gritty, and action-packed take on the Stephen King-penned novel first exploded into cinemas in the fall, with audiences flocking to see Glen Powell in his latest role. Now, the movie plans to continue its marathon and take over a new streaming home, with an official release date set for Paramount+ on January 13. There, it will find itself in good company alongside other favorites from the genre star’s blossoming career, including Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick and J.D. Dillard’s Devotion.

One of four King novels to receive the big-screen treatment in 2025, The Running Man is based on the horror maestro’s 1982 novel of the same name and serves as the second time that the tale has jumped from page to screen following the Arnold Schwarzenegger-led 1987 production. Leaning more into sci-fi than horror, the movie follows Ben Richards (Powell), a man living in a dystopian future who, no matter how hard he works, can’t get ahead in life. After his daughter comes down with the flu, which needs a simple dose of antibiotics to clear up, he puts his life on the line and joins the competition series known as The Running Man. Alongside two other competitors, Ben dashes towards survival and attempts to outpace an army of goons tasked with taking him down, all in hopes of winning riches beyond his wildest imagination.

Boasting an impressive cast that fully brings King’s tale of desperation to life, The Running Man also stars Michael Cera (Arrested Development), Colman Domingo (Euphoria), Josh Brolin (Weapons), Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies), Jayme Lawson (Sinners), William H. Macy (Shameless), Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Emilia Jones (Locke & Key) and more.

‘The Running Man’s Unfortunate Box Office Run

Despite largely positive reviews from critics, The Running Man just couldn’t seem to keep up the pace at the global box office. Against a budget of $110 million, the movie left cinemas earning just $69 million — far off from what the folks at Paramount were likely hoping for. Considering the movie’s star power and subject matter, it came as quite a shock that the title underperformed so massively. But, perhaps following three other King-based releases, folks were just running out of steam by the time The Running Man dashed into cinemas.

Still, The Running Man certainly deserves a watch, and Paramount+ subscribers can do exactly that when it crosses the streamer’s finish line on January 13.
