Ewan is Deputy Editor for ScreenRant's gaming section. He still quite hasn’t gotten out of his mid 00’s emo phase, and knows more about The Legend of Zelda and Doctor Who than is probably healthy.
Ewan oversees the content operation of ScreenRant's gaming output, working with a talented team of writers and editors to cover everything from the latest GTA 6 news to the indie games you need on your radar.
Former Editor of GAMINGbible, Ewan also has words at Kotaku, Den of Geek, NME, and UNILAD. He's appeared on various podcasts, including VGC's and BBC's Let's Talk About Tech.
If you're a gamer with a Steam account (which, let's be honest, is most of us), you can download and keep no less than eight brand-new free games right now. No subscription needed, no catch. Just seven games that might not have been on your radar previously.
2025 was an absolutely massive year for video games, and 2026 doesn't look like it's going to be any different. Between GTA 6, the 30th anniversary of Pokémon, Resident Evil Requiem, and so much more besides, we're going to be ridiculously busy. That's why I'd advise you to play through as many of these free games now as you possibly can. Because once the releases start coming, they aren't going to let up.
Ktrl Smash
An action platformer with style
Ktrl Smash is a fast-paced multiplayer arena game "where anything can become a weapon." After choosing your fighter, you can grab bats, baseballs, or even chairs to knock out enemies and make sure you're the last one standing. The goal is to stay alert, keep moving, and defeat as many players as you can. It was released at the end of last year and doesn't have many reviews yet, but be sure to check out this small game when you get a chance.
Poker Fate - ACG Texas Hold'em
Poker? I barely know her!
Poker Fate is basically a card game for people who like anime girls. If that sounds like a loaded comment, I promise I'm not trying to be shady. That's just what this game is. The game's official description even states it's an "anime-style Texas Hold'em game featuring beautiful heroines." It has mixed reviews, but I think you'll decide whether this game is for you based on that one line of description alone.
Space Aces
In space, nobody can hear your game is free
Space Aces is an ambitious indie MMORPG shooter that promises an "online universe full of action, strategy, and fierce competition. Step into the cockpit and evolve from a rookie pilot into the most feared Ace in the galaxy!" Again, reviews are mixed, but there are gamers who have already put hundreds of hours into this one, so there's clearly something special here.
Humanoid
A parody sci-fi game
Humanoid is a retro-flavored top-down shooter in the style of early 8-bit arcade games that was released on January 1. "To survive, you need to play aggressively: you're rewarded for acting fast and clearing rooms. It is simple to play, difficult to win."
Drunk Driving Simulator
Don't try this at home
If you've ever wanted to see what it's like to drive drunk without actually driving drunk IRL (because, please don't ever do that), Drunk Driving Simulator is the game for you. I think this one is pretty self-explanatory, right? It also has some really strong reviews, so maybe it's really worth checking out.
Rogue Slots
Thou must spin to win, m'lord
Rogue Slots is a fun deckbuilding roguelike, with a slot machine as your Dungeon Master. You can spin to strike, and every action is dictated by the slot machine. You'll load the reels with weapons, coins, and cursed relics, then see what fate has in store for you. This one really is a novel concept, well executed.
Once Upon A Shell
Hare today, gone tomorrow
You'll be drawn to Once Upon a Shell because of its gorgeous storybook aesthetic, but you'll stick around for its adorable racing fun. This is a genuinely sweet game that's perfect to play with any younger family members you might want to get into video games, and I'd urge you to check it out.
That's your lot for now, but I should stress that there are always new games being added to Steam every single day, so I'll be back soon with another roundup of the best of the bunch that might otherwise have passed you by.
