“Sinners” (Hannah Beachler), “Frankenstein” (Tamara Deverell), “Wicked: For Good” (Nathan Crowley) and “F1” ( Ben Munro and Mark Tildesley) are among the films nominated by the Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) for its 30th Excellence in Production Design Awards in motion pictures, television, commercials and music video categories.
Also nominated are the production designers behind Taylor Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia” (Ethan Tobman) and Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra” (Wesley Goodrich) music videos.
The ADG divides live-action features into three categories, splitting period feature film, fantasy feature film and contemporary feature film. “Hamnet” (Fiona Crombie), “Marty Supreme” (Jack Fisk) and “The Phoenician Scheme” (Adam Stockhausen) round out the period film category.
In the fantasy feature race, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” (Dylan Cole, Ben Procter), “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (Kasra Farahani), “Mickey 17” (Fiona Crombie), “Superman” (Beth Mickle) and last year’s winner “Wicked: For Good” (Crowley) are nominated.
The contemporary film category sees the production designers from “Bugonia” (James Price), “F1” (Ben Munro, Mark Tildesley), “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” (Gary Freeman), “One Battle After Another”(Florencia Martin) and “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” (Rick Heinrich) among the nominees.
On the TV side, “The Bear,” “Stranger Things” and “The Studio” are among the nominated shows.
For the past three years, the ADG honorees have matched the winners of the production design Oscar. Last year’s ADG winner, “Wicked,” went on to take home the Oscar. Prior to that, “Poor Things” (Shona Heath and James Price) and “Dune” (Patrice Vermette and Zsuzsanna Sipos) also won the Oscar for production design.
The event will be produced by Megan Elizabeth Bell, Michael Allen Glover and Tom Wilkins.
“As we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Excellence in Production Design Awards, we celebrate not just the outstanding achievements of the past year, but also three decades of visionary artistry that have defined the visual storytelling of film and television,” said Dina Lipton, President of the Art Directors Guild. “This milestone honors the Art Directors, Illustrators, Storyboard Artists, Set Designers, Scenic and Graphic Artists and all of the creative minds who work in the art department and continue to captivate and inspire audiences worldwide.”
Bell, Glover and Wilkins said, “This 30th Annual ADG Awards marks a meaningful moment in our industry’s history, as we recognize the remarkable creativity and innovation that drive production design forward. We’re honored to gather the creative community to celebrate this year’s standout work across film, television, and beyond—and to pay homage to the legendary artists whose lifelong contributions have helped shape the art and craft of our profession.”
The ceremony will take place on Feb. 28 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
