EXCLUSIVE: A hit French thriller series is set to cast its shadow over MHz Choice in the U.S. The streaming service has snapped up Sea Shadows, rounding out a slew of sales for the show, which has also made a splash on home turf, becoming one of France’s most-watched dramas.
Eco-thriller Sea Shadows follows oceanographer Abigail as she returns to her hometown to investigate a mysterious shipwreck. She uncovers more than she expected and discovers a mysterious underwater presence. Fleur Geffrier (Das Boot) plays Abigail and the cast also includes Guillaume Labbé (The Hookup Plan) and Thierry Godard (A French Village).
The series was for pubcaster channel France 2 where it was known as Rivages and averaged a chunky 4.2M viewers, with more added via catch-up. France TV Distribution handles international sales and struck the MHz deal, the SVOD specializing in international drama. The agreement comes on the heels of sales to Walter Presents for the UK and Ireland, NDR in Germany and others, as we reported back in October.
The series was created by Jonathan Rio (Fritures) and Monica Rattazzi (Piste Noire). Both also serve as series writers alongside Mathilde Arnaud (Master Crimes) and Fanny Talmone (Captain Sharif). David Hourrègue (Skam France) directed all six eps. Mintee Studio and Thalie images produce.
The sales news follows a solid festival and market run for the series. It bowed at Series Mania in 2024, went on to scoop the Audience Award at the Montréal Séries Festival and play in competition at the South International Series Festival 2024 in Spain. France TV Distribution subsequently made the show a priority title at the Rendez-Vous and MIPCOM markets, and now looks to be reaping the dividends.
