Timothée Chalamet’s new ping pong biopic had another successful run at the box office last weekend, as it’s aiming to become the first A24 film in history to reach $100 million at the domestic box office. At the time of writing, Marty Supreme has grossed $70.1 million at the domestic box office and $8.4 million internationally for a global total of $78.5 million. This $70.1 million in America is enough to easily push it past the $61.6 million domestic total of Napoleon, the 2023 box office bomb starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Ridley Scott.

Napoleon is widely viewed as one of, if not the biggest, financial misfires of Ridley Scott’s career. The film recouped $156 million in international markets, so it left theaters with a collective total of $217 million, but it’s estimated that it cost around $200 million to make. If it does indeed boast a $200 million production budget, this would mean it needed around $400 million to break even. Napoleon was met with criticism upon its release for not being historically accurate, so much so that Ridley Scott came out with a statement pushing back against these complaints. This controversy is still discussed to this day.

The story couldn’t be more different for Marty Supreme. It was one of the most anticipated movies of all of last year, and it lived up to the hype when first reviews painted it as one of A24’s best movies ever. Chalamet’s performance in Marty Supreme could easily earn him his first Oscar. Chalamet set the world on fire in 2024 with Dune: Part Two and A Complete Unknown, but Marty Supreme is his true coming-out party as an A-list leading star.

Who Else Stars in ‘Marty Supreme’?

Starring opposite Chalamet in Marty Supreme is Gwyneth Paltrow (Iron Man) as Kay Stone, one of the primary love interests in the film for Marty Mauser. Odessa A’zion (Ghosts) plays his other love interest, Rachel Mizler, whom he ends up with by the conclusion — spoiler alert. Tyler the Creator also stars in the film as Marty’s friend Wally, and Shark Tank veteran Kevin O’Leary as Milton Rockwell, Kay Stone’s husband and one of Marty’s backers helping him reach his dream. The film was written and directed by Josh Safdie, who worked with his brother, Benny Safdie, on another popular A24 film, Uncut Gems (starring Adam Sandler).
