Resident Evil Requiem is nearly upon us, so you might want to start catching up on the story so far. I love Resident Evil, but it isn't half convoluted. If you're not fully up to speed, you will get left behind. The good news? Resident Evil Village, the most recent game in the saga, will soon be free for millions of gamers to download and play.
Released back in 2021, Resident Evil Village is a genuinely fantastic survival horror that manages to balance scares with action in a way I haven't seen since Resident Evil 4. It may be less intense than Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, but when it does lean into full-on horror, it delivers in a big way. Anyone else remember the baby? Yeah.
Resident Evil Village Is Coming To Game Pass

If you haven't played Resident Evil Village and want to get caught up ahead of Requiem, Xbox Game Pass is officially adding the game at no extra cost on January 20. Given it's not a particularly long game (you can whip through it in about 10 hours), you'll have plenty of time to roll credits before Resident Evil Requiem lands.
Here's what we said in our 9/10 review back when Village released:
"Capcom has managed to make a game that feels both familiar and fresh at the same time. It's not a complete overhaul, but rather a refinement of the series as a whole. Resident Evil Village is a gorgeous innovation that preserves the heart of a beloved franchise, and continues a string of excellent mainline entries that will dazzle veterans and newcomers alike."
Given Resident Evil Village is joining Game Pass, I'd also be willing to put money on PlayStation Plus adding the title to its Extra/Premium lineup for January. But, I must stress, that's pure speculation on my part. I bet I'm right, though. Watch this space.
Xbox Game Pass Has A Few Resident Evil Games
Scare up some knowledge
Xbox Game Pass actually has quite a few Resident Evil games at this point, if you're looking to really get up to date with the whole story. The excellent remake of Resident Evil 2 and slightly less excellent remake of Resident Evil 3 are both free with Game Pass at the time of writing, so be sure to check those out, too.
Just don't forget: if you can only play one game ahead of Resident Evil Requiem, make sure it's Resident Evil Village. Trust me, it'll help everything make much more sense. Or as much sense as a Resident Evil game can ever reasonably make.
