Prime Video's World War II movie The Tank is now a streaming hit after a quiet theatrical release in 2025. Directed by Dennis Gansel, also known as Der Tiger or The Tiger, The Tank released theatrically in Germany in September 2025 and enjoyed regional success before releasing internationally on streaming on January 2, 2026. It currently has a 62% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Tank follows the five-man crew of a German Tiger tank who embark on a secret mission through no man's land on the Eastern Front in 1943, during which they are forced to confront their own inner demons. The Tank stars David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, André Hennicke, Leonard Kunz, Arndt Schwering-Sohnrey, Tilman Strauss, and Sebastian Urzendowsky.
As of today (January 9), The Tank is the No. 1 movie in the world on Prime Video, per FlixPatrol. It ranks above the November 2025 adventure Trap House, the perennially popular Jason Statham outing A Working Man, and the star-studded holiday offering Red One, as well as Follow My Voice, The Accountant, Tell Me Softly, The Good Neighbor, Wrath of Man, and Playdate.
The Tank has been in the Top 10 for six days now, while charts also show that it has, unsurprisingly, been especially popular in Germany since its streaming release, having been No. 1 in the country every day since January 3 (also in Austria). Meanwhile, Prime Video's TV charts continue to be dominated by Fallout, the returning hit video game adaptation series starring Ella Purnell.
Director Dennis Gansel is also known for helming Before the Fall, The Wave, We Are the Night, Mechanic: Resurrection, and Berlin, I Love You. His two highest-rated and only certified fresh movies on Rotten Tomatoes are Before the Fall (at 67%) and We Are the Night (60%). The Tank, on the other hand, has not collected enough critics' reviews for a Tomatometer score.
People watching The Tank might also be interested in seeing Nuremberg, James Vanderbilt's WWII docudrama starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek, which flew somewhat under the radar. The relatively well-reviewed entry is still in some theaters, while being available on digital platforms, including Prime Video. However, U.S. audiences are much more likely to have heard of Nuremberg than The Tank.
Prime Video is releasing some more exciting action movies in the new year, such as The Wrecking Crew starring Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa on January 28 and The Bluff starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Karl Urban sometime in February. Such entries may soon overtake The Tank, but for now, it has become a sleeper worldwide hit with its streaming status.
