Ewan oversees the content operation of ScreenRant's gaming output, working with a talented team of writers and editors to cover everything from the latest GTA 6 news to the indie games you need on your radar.

PlayStation has kicked off 2026 by unveiling some pretty gorgeous new hardware that we'll be able to get our hands on very soon indeed. If your New Year's resolution was to spend less money on gaming, you might want to look away now.

The PlayStation 5 is now well into its fifth year, which is genuinely alarming to think about. I suppose something must have happened in 2020 that completely destroyed our perception of time, but I can't think what that would have been. While the PlayStation 6 is definitely looming, Sony has a few more surprises for PS5 gamers yet.

PlayStation's New Hardware Proves There's Life In The PS5 Yet

These are some pretty slick colors

PlayStation 5 new custom colors

PlayStation has officially unveiled the Hyperpop Collection, which features three new designs for DualSense wireless controllers and PS5 console covers. "With glossy blacks shifting into vivid neons, each finish introduces an all-new aesthetic into your gaming setup."

While a new range of controllers and custom colors might not be that exciting, I'm pretty sure most of us aren't ready for the next-generation PlayStation consoles just yet. The Hyperpop Collection proves there's life in the PlayStation 5 yet, thankfully.

As per PlayStation's blog post, players can choose between Techno, Remix, or Rhythm, which is painfully cringe marketing speak for red, green, or blue.

PlayStation Color, Material, and Finish Designer Leo Cardoso said:

"We’re cranking the volume all the way up with a collection that doesn’t just stand out, it takes over the room. Inspired by the glow of the RGB lights of your impressive gaming setups, these new colors go LOUD in the best possible way."

The Hyperpop DualSense wireless controllers are going to be sold for an eye-watering $84.99, so you might want to start saving. The matching PS5 console covers will be available "in limited quantities" for $74.99. The collection officially launches March 12, and you can pre-order from January 16.

The PlayStation 6 Is Getting Closer

Brace yourselves

We're definitely closer to the launch of the PlayStation 6 now, but it could still be further away than expected. According to recent reports, Sony may have to delay the PlayStation 6 as a result RAM availability, a significant issue facing most hardware manufacturers on the planet right now.

The upshot of this is that we get more time to spend with the PlayStation 5, a console I feel many gamers would agree still doesn't feel like it's quite proven itself yet.
