Pierce Brosnan’s new sports biopic, Giant, debuts with a solid Rotten Tomatoes score. The new movie depicts the true story of Naseem Hamed (Amir El-Masry), who trains to become a boxing champion with the help of Brendan Ingle (Brosnan).
According to Rotten Tomatoes, Giant has a 67% score based on 15 reviews. If the score stands as more reviews are tabulated, it would continue a Rotten Tomatoes streak for Brosnan, whose last three movies were designated “fresh.”
The early reviews reveal that Giant is an entertaining underdog story, but it’s not as flawless as Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky. Nevertheless, the great dynamic between Brosnan and El-Masry carries the movie’s compelling story.
Interestingly, Stallone is one of the executive producers, while Rowan Athale wrote and directed the biopic. While Brosnan is known for playing James Bond during the 1990s and early 2000s, Giant trailers revealed one of his most stunning transformations yet as Brendan Ingle.
Although the movie has fairly good reviews, it’s not without controversy. Despite the film being marketed as a biopic, the real Naseem Hamed has heavily criticized the movie’s historical accuracy and even went on to say that “80-90% of the film is just made up.” Read his thoughts (via The Mirror):
"I don't want to go through everything that's wrong with this film, it has some good moments and some bad moments and there's some mixed feelings about it. But to watch a film that's done about you and your trainer, it's not easy to watch when you've had no input whatsoever.
"The only time I got to see the film was when it was finished, and then you can have your opinion, but it's not an easy process to see all of these things within the film list far from the truth. But I'm treating it like a movie is a movie, Hollywood is Hollywood and the film game is the film game; we can't change that.”
Hamed retired from boxing in 2002. Despite stating that the movie is fictionalized, he still supports the movie and has appeared alongside the cast during the premiere.
While Giant is now in theaters in the United Kingdom, it has yet to have a release date in the United States.
