While Sarah Catherine Hook might be best known for starring in high-stakes dramas and supernatural horrors, her latest turn in “People We Meet on Vacation” saw the star step into a new type of movie: a romantic comedy.
“I’m so happy to be here, to be a mellow girl on screen, not screaming or crying,” the actress joked at the Los Angeles premiere of the film Tuesday night. “I truly feel like crying and screaming [are] the number one things on my resume, right?”
Take a look at Hook’s credits and you’ll see what she means; after making her feature film debut in “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” in 2021, the actress went on to join Netflix’s teen vampire show “First Kill,” Prime Video’s “Cruel Intentions” series and the much-talked about Season 3 of HBO’s “The White Lotus,” in which she played Piper, the Ratliff family’s privileged daughter.
An adaptation of Emily Henry’s best-selling, fan-favorite novel, “People We Meet on Vacation” is a “When Harry Met Sally”-inspired romantic comedy that chronicles the unlikely friendship between free-spirited Poppy (Emily Bader) and routine-loving Alex (Tom Blyth) who spend one week together each year on vacation. But when they begin to question if they could actually be a perfect match, the careful balance of their friendship is put to the test. Hook plays Sarah, Alex’s long-term girlfriend.
And while she might just have made her rom-com debut, Hook has long been a fan of the genre. “I’m so happy to be in a rom-com,” Hook said. “It’s something I’ve been wanting to check off my list for a while and I hope it opens up doors to other rom-coms, artistically. I’d love to see more of them.”
Her favorite film from the genre? “Bridget Jones’s Diary.” “It’s my comfort movie,” she said.
“People We Meet on Vacation” was directed by Brett Haley and written by Yulin Kuang, Nunzio Randazzo, Amos Vernon. The film will be available to stream starting on Jan. 9 on Netflix.
