Netflix's teaser for One Piece season 2, now with the subtitle "Into the Grand Line," goes heavy on the presence of Baroque Works. Footage shows the wax-tastic Mr. 3, Miss Valentine twirling her parasol, and emotive artist Miss Goldenweek, but also offers the best look yet at Vivi, played by Bridgerton's Charithra Chandran.

All are great additions to the live-action One Piece cast, but none of Baroque Works' underlings are going to trouble a list of One Piece's strongest characters.

The most powerful figures in the Netflix series so far would be Luffy himself, Garp, Shanks, and Mihawk, but we know season 2 will disrupt the status quo with some major castings that aren't shown in trailer footage. Nevertheless, the One Piece season 2 trailer does contain a blink-and-you'll-miss-it debut for one of the most formidable individuals in the entire story.

One Piece's Season 2 Trailer Briefly Shows Dragon's Powers

The Loguetown tower is destroyed in One Piece season 2.

Around the 1:16 mark in the official teaser for Netflix's live-action One Piece season 2, a tall structure is shown being blasted apart, sparks and electricity shooting in all directions. Looking closely, this appears to be Gold Roger's execution tower in Loguetown from the beginning of One Piece's very first episode, which would mean the thunder here emanates from the Devil Fruit powers of Luffy's father, Monkey D. Dragon.

Thanks to Eiichiro Oda's manga, we know One Piece season 2 will include a sequence where Buggy and Alvida team up, capturing Luffy atop Loguetown's execution tower and coming very close to killing the Straw Hat captain then and there. Luffy is spared by the rather convenient timing of a lightning strike, which hits the tower, brings it tumbling down, and leaves Luffy's rubber body unharmed.

Rigo Sanchez has been cast as Dragon in One Piece season 2.

While Luffy chalks his survival up to good fortune, we can be almost certain the thunder came from Monkey D. Dragon, secretly saving his son from the shadows.

Since the One Piece manga still hasn't revealed its name, Dragon's Devil Fruit is a source of ongoing debate. The lightning fruit already belongs to someone else, so Dragon's abilities more likely involve controlling weather or generating storms. Whatever the specifics of Monkey D. Dragon's powers ultimately turn out to be, this scene in One Piece season 2 appears to mark the first demonstration of them in live-action.

How Powerful Is Monkey D. Dragon, Really?

Monkey D Dragon in the One Piece anime

Dragon is somewhat infamous among One Piece's audience for not getting involved in the story. The Loguetown incident aside, nothing has made Dragon emerge from hiding - not the liberation of kingdoms like Arabasta and Dressrosa, not the earth-shaking Summit War, not even the arrival of the God's Knights on Elbaf.

As such, Dragon's power has never been fully tested in One Piece. And yet, it's safe to assume that he ranks among the top 10 strongest figures in the entire franchise. As the son of Garp and father of Luffy, it's clear that immense strength runs within the Monkey family. Even without considering his family tree, however, Dragon commands the Revolutionary Army and is considered the most wanted man in the world by the Marines.

Given that Dragon is charged with leading an entire army of rebels, and that the World Government has identified him as a key enemy, it's only natural to think that Luffy's dad possesses a level of battle power equal to his mighty reputation.

From a purely Doylist perspective, the fact that Oda is saving Dragon for One Piece's final battles heavily implies that his strength ranks among the most elite. Viewers will get a taste of that strength in One Piece season 2. And they can look forward to seeing Dragon in full swing sometime around One Piece season 22.
