One Piece's Gol D. Roger has always been considered one of the strongest characters in the series, but a new bit of information might have allowed a certain Emperor to surpass him. Gol D. Roger is known as the King of Pirates for a reason: he's absurdly strong.

Even though he died before the main events of the series, Roger's name carries a weight that few others can compare to. He's a behemoth of a character, but with new information coming to light, one of his former crew members might have actually gained the strength needed to surpass his former captain.

Gol D. Roger Has Been the Pinnacle of Pirates, But...

Gol D. Rogers is unquestionably one of the strongest characters in One Piece. He's one of the few characters to become unreasonably strong without ever eating a Devil Fruit, showcasing just how amazing his Haki and swordsmanship are.

Not only is Rogers amazingly strong, he also led one of the strongest pirate crews in the franchise. Silvers Rayleigh, known as the Dark King, was his right-hand man and Luffy's eventual Haki teacher, and he's just one of the many formidable pirates that make up the Rogers Pirates crew.

While there are a ton of characters equal to Rogers in strength, like Monkey D. Garp and Whitebeard in their respective primes, there has never been a pirate who could be considered stronger when Rogers was at his best. As of the recent chapters of One Piece, however, one Red-Haired Pirate can now be considered to be stronger than his former captain.

... Shanks Might've Just Become Number One

Shanks can now be considered stronger than the former King of Pirates, Gol D. Roger. It's a fairly complicated reveal, as it involves several characters who are long since dead during the main events of the series, but One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda has never been one for simplicity.

Harald, the former legendary King of Elbaph, was said to be on the same level as Rocks D. Xebec, an enigmatic and insanely powerful character in One Piece. Loki, the Prince of Elbaph and Harald's son, was able to beat his father in battle, and Shanks was able to beat Loki in battle as well.

If Rogers wasn't able to stop Rocks D. Xebec on his own, and Rocks was as strong as Harald, who was in turn beaten by someone Shanks would go on to beat, it would stand to reason that Shanks is stronger than the former King of Pirates. This is not accounting for Rogers' growth in strength after God Valley, however.

There's no telling who would win in a fight between Shanks and Roger if they were both in their prime, but surprisingly, Oda's recent chapters have pointed towards Shanks as being the strongest pirate currently in One Piece.
